Emirates Major Flight Numbers Change?

I’ve just checked the new Emirates winter timetable and found out that several flight numbers have been changed. Does anyone know why? I know they already did something similar some years back in order to relate certain blocks of numbers to geographic regions (e.g. 000 and 100 for Europe/200 for North America/300 for East Asia/400 for Australia/500 for India-Bangladesh-SriLanka/600 for Pakistan/700 for Africa/800 and 900 for Middle East/Gulf).

This time it's different, they only changed the numbers by two or four digits, see the following:

EK089 changed to EK087 (Zurich)
EK125 changed to EK127 (Vienna)
336 to 338 (Dhaka-Kuala Lumpur)
384 to 386 (Bangkok-Hong Kong)
430 to 432 (Singapore-Brisbane-Auckland)
540 to 544 (Chennai)
610 to 612 (Islamabad)
634 to 636 (Peshawar)
731 to 733 (Khartoum)
781 to 783 (Lagos-Accra)
973 to 977 (Teheran)

What’s the purpose of this?

Regards
Udo

it's probably so that as they add extra services to existing destinations, they can carry on in sequence

DXB-SIN-MEL vv use to be EK 068/069.

Last year it changed to 404/405, with the new DXB-MEL non-stops being 406/407..

Make sense?

Could the renumbering have something to do with an indication of which departure/arrival bank the respective flights are operating out of/into?

HB-IWC,

that might be a reason. But the way of flight numbers change still seems to be randomly.
