So many liveries, when they first came out, I said yuck... And with time, I've grown to enjoy- or atleast not mind them. The SAS livery is the one that comes best to mind, but also the Virgin, BMI, NW, Japan Airlines...
The one I still can't stand is the new Delta one.

I really like the new United, although it's too bad we won't see the "Flying Colors" variations - I think the planes would be stunning in that livery in shades of red, orange, gold, purple, green, gold, silver...at the very least, they'd catch your eye!!
The "Euro-white" thing works for some, but not for others. South African is beautiful, but Japan Air Lines is not. Continental is okay (great tail!!), and Northwest, I'm getting used to.
The jury is still out on Delta. They can't make up their minds, so I won't either...for now.

Fastest change of mind for me was new AC c/s. Until I saw it was actually blue and not Euro white in better photos I hated it. 24 hours later it's fine but still want to see in person.
I do hate explaining over and over about corolation of bankruptcies and new c/s vs costs over and over and simply the amount of space used on c/s threads consume but I guess it's all part of aviation. Some inspire and some don't and thats why we have so many pizza stores.

I would have to agree. I think of all the recent new liveries, NW will take some time for me to get used to. Personally, the problem for me is in the tail. Why oh why couldn't they paint the entire thing red? It looks like a cut-off job to me...like they started painting from the top of the tail and ran out of red paint on the way down. I do very much like the fact that they kept the old (however, nicely color-updated) compass-circle logo on the plane, and I like that they enlarged it and made it a distinguishing part of the overall look. Personally, I think it looks best on the A330. I will have to get used to seeing "NWA" painted so boldly on the side of the plane, rather than the old, larger "Northwest." Honestly, I don't hate the new livery...it will just take me some time to get used to it, and I'm sure in time I will.
I liked JAL's new scheme almost immediately. It looks classy.
UA's scheme will continue to impress me as new types are eventually painted.
...btw, does anyone know if UA's first-to-be repainted 747-400 has made it to the paint shop yet? It is still due out sometime in November, right?
AC's new paint leaves much to be desired (no pun intended), however the new uniforms look great!
In my opinion, FedEx's planes are currently in the most need of a new look...but that's just my opinion. They can keep the purple (that is, of course, the signature color), but perhaps with a tweak in shades or application in design.
It's an entirely different kind of flying; all together.

I think the new Air Canada livery takes the lead for worst new livery. It looks too much like a LCC and the blue really doesent make me think of Canada. I think they should have stuck to red or green as they were one of the few carriers with that combination.
Northwest's looks ok in sunny weather, but in overcast conditions it looks dull. None the less, it is a nice change at my hometown airport.

I never "get used to" a livery. If a livery takes getting used to, it's not a very good livery. A livery is used for marketing an airline and the purpose for changing from an old to a new livery is supposed to be to update the image of the airline and drum up business. The more passengers that have to "get used to" the new livery, the less effective that livery change has been.
I usually appreciate new liveries and most often I think they're an improvement. But there are exceptions, especially when the previous livery wasn't particularly dated to begin with but even sometimes when it obviously was in need of an update.
Air Canada's new livery I think is pointless. UA's new livery I think is great, compared to their "old" livery, which was an awful, awful change from the three-stripe livery they had prior to it. I like Spirit's new colors. I could go either way on JAL's "new" (actually 2-3 years old) livery - the new one does look "newer" but I think the old one's classier. NWA's new livery I think is excellent, and their previous livery was terrible. I don't mind Delta, though I also liked their previous scheme, which I thought was a tasteful update to their classic colors (which were definitely getting on in years before they were replaced).
My least favorite livery updates of all time have to be United's grey/blue planes and US Airways' update from the silver US Air scheme. I just don't like overly dark planes - I don't think it makes them look anymore "business-like", just dark. I also really dislike Southwest's new blue scheme, which is somehow even worse than their classic desert scheme. I will never get used to these liveries.

Here's the breakdown
EL AL: boring
Sri Lankan: boring
Saudi Arabian: boring
Air Pacific: new and previous livery both suck
Tui/Thomson.co.uk group: ugly/tasteless
Varig: needs a new livery, the new billboard update still doesn't cut it.
Aerolineas Argentinas: boring
Avianca: tasteless, just waiting for better times to change that gray Summa alliance marketing disaster.
Air Canada: boring, new livery is ridiculously eurowhite, current is just ugly.
PIA: looks like a bad EL AL/Saudia hybrid. The ugliest livery of a major airline.
as far as US carriers:
United: current and new livery are so-so, neither are classics.
NWA: the new livery looks better on the A319 and 757-300 for some reason, otherwise still prefer the old.
Spirit: digital livery is innovative but still too white
Continental: could use an update or a new livery
JetBlue: different tails can't save it, boring
FedEx: could use an update, boring.
Delta: wavy gravy looked quite alright on the 727s and the 767s, but not on the 777s or 737s. The bare metal underside is what saves it.
Southwest: classic, also like the new canyon blue, but don't like how the red now curves on the fuselage, because of that, still think the old is better.
Air Tran: there is something wrong with the green pattern on the bottom as it goes up to the tail. It looks ugly when the aircraft is viewed 3/4 from the rear, more colorful but not necessarily tasteful. I've never liked the font of the "a" on the tail. The original 1994 livery was the best looking one.

The new Spirit, AirTran, and Southwest colors are very good. In time of way too many white fuselage planes flying around, it's nice to have lots of color.

That is precisely what saves it from being another minimalistic, boring design. It makes the overall design more balanced, and prevents it from being just another one-color fuselage with a fully painted tail scheme. Small details can make a big difference.

I fly for NWA and I really think our new livery blows!! On the right side of the aircraft, the compass (Triangle) is pointing Northeast. Mr. Anderson, our former CEO, was asked about this, and instead of saying, "Whoops...that's a mistake" He said, "Well...uh....we want to be a forward facing company". I don't like the lower case 'nwa'. It looks cheap. The tail should have just been painted all red and left alone, however, I do like the way the tail color cuts off before reaching the bottom. A senior MSP Captain told me we were going to go white but when Japan Airlines unveiled their livery, we went with the 'Pearl Silver'. Once your on board though, you forget about the paint and worry about the pain! Of being squished in steerage!!

At first, I thought the new UA livery was just OK. My first thought was that it could definitely use a red and/or orange strip in with all that blue. After a few weeks, and getting to see it on some planes in person (even on N775UA), it quickly became one of my most loved c/s.
I always thought NW's new livery was great. A nice clean job compared to the 'bowling shoe' mess. The compass on the tail pointing the opposite direction does bother me a bit, but as mentioned before, it just makes the livery a tad bit 'special' if you will.
When USAir changed to US Airways and completely changed from the bare metal to the 'Vader' livery, I was very disappointed. It never was and never will be something I'll love.. No change of taste there.

I think Spirit should have kept the Blue computer chip scheme on white instead of NWA Silver and black chip on their Airbus. It's so Boring!! I saw their 'Bus' here in Detroit next to an MD-80!! The MD-80 looked brighter, happier, and more alive. The huge silver bus looked like a NWA reject and cheap black and white xerox copy....Very sad.

Well new liveries will take some time to get use to. For example this took alot of getting use to. It was only when I saw it one afternoon in direct sun light that I began to like it and even then it too me a little while and now I love it. Yes it has been called gash chamber green but at least they didnt go with the convential euro white theme.

Seeing our new birds in person, it is a nite and day difference. The new livery is as Nicole Richie says That's Hot!. Our former colors are no slouch but the new one will grow on you!
NW, sorry, that new livery does not do it. Sort of like 70's avante garde. The NW livery prior seems timless, simple but, contemporary. The former NW livery even on those solid gold to make you feel old DC-9's conveys an image of a great legacy carrier that was formerly known as Northwest Orient. (back in the day). The current 70's retro avante garde reminds me of NBC's blunder also in that decade from Hades with the basic N that looked like it was designed in a school for challanged youngsters that took the short half loaf bus. Now, NW's current livery is not that bad but that NBC logo was the joke of the day. It cost them millions of bucks and many minds put together and it went over like W's economic polilcies. And, the Delta Wavey Gravey is boring and fugly! The classic widget rules and I feel if DL goes back to the classic widget red white and blues than their fortunes may just turn around for the better.

US Airways clearly has the best, most sophisticated livery in the US. I also like the new NWA livery. UAL is too much like JetBlue, AA & CO are boring, DL never should have changed from livery # 2 (I like - gravy stinks).

I forgot Finnar and Lufthansa. However the latter has been forever boring since the late 80's. I don't think either one cares to change their look anytime soon, especially Finnair which has changed the look of the tail about 3 times lately, and actually made it worse. What they needed to do was add some color to the fuselage.
