Northwest Goes For The Kill At IND

In a remarkable coincidence the day after ATA files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Northwest Airlines announced 12 new routes out of Indianapolis with special introductory fares. Most routes are to commence October 31 while flights to MCO and FLL begin December 15th.

Besides flights to Northwest hubs, the other routes include New York, MCO, TPA, Washington D.C. (Did not specify whether this is DCA or IAD), LAS, RDU, RSW, LAX, BOS, PHL, BDL, and FLL.

Sort of reminds me of Bush's wolves commercial where they are sensing weakness and going on the attack.

These new routes were announced months ago. The only coincidence is that ATA decided to file the day before NW's flights were scheduled to begin.

There's no coincidence... NW announced these routes weeks ago.

I don't know...now that ATA is staying in IND, i think there is going to be a long fight between NW and TZ...When TZ comes out of bankruptcy i expect them to fight.

NW is not only going for the kill on ATA, but UA as well. Many of those routes are currently operated by US: PHL, BOS, DCA, LGA. US is still rather strong in IND even though they have removed their hub status. US typically draws on a lot of the higher fare paying Lilly executives and the like, but it looks like NW is wanting more of the market.


If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

I don't know.. I do know that RDU is a new station from IND... not served by ATA or US... NW just saw where good potential was and took a jab at it.. The RDU-IND is an old J1 route.. and at ~$200 r/t.. it's not that bad! ATA had an opportunity to jump on that route as RDUAA approached them.. but it was declined by ATA. Let's see how NW does on it..

Typo. alert: I think you meant US.

Many of those routes are currently operated by US: PHL, BOS, DCA, LGA. US is still rather strong in IND even though they have removed their hub status.

It's a shame that TZ didn't offer non-stop service to IND from the above-cities. Had they offered PHL-IND service in addition to PHL-MDW, not all their routes would been eclipsed/overlapped by WN when they came to town a few months ago.

a few facts....these routes were indeed announced weeks ago and ATA responded by addind new routes and frequency.As a matter of fact ATA has moved its ticket counters to UA's old space because of expansion. Also lets not forget that NW tried to make IND a "focus" city before and it didnt bode well. GO ATA !!!!!!

This was announced in July... hardly coincidental. It's just NWA seizing a market and building on it. It's just good business that NWA has got the foresight and vision to do what is necessary to remain competitive. This IND expansion by NWA has very little if anything to do with ATAs announcement yesterday.

Unless NWA announced new routes TODAY above and beyond what was announced in July... this is old news and not even worth discussing anymore.

I always root for the underdog. I'd like a chance to fly on ATA someday. Hope they keep CLT (served from of IND instead of MDW maybe?)!

Come on guys, there was a thread almost identical to this a couple weeks ago, this was announnced in July! NW is indeed trying to hurt the smaller airlines such as Midwest and ATA.

Good god... this is like talking to a brick wall. I give up!! When you all come back to earth and recognize the reality that NWA is a business that needs to MAKE MONEY and take care of its passengers and evolve for long term viability - then we can have intelligent discussions. Considering the sources, that's not probable. For now, you all can argue and throw your NWA is out to get Midwest and ATA tantrums.

Companies that hire the wrong people (especially at the top) eventually fail. The good employees have an easier time finding jobs than the bad employees. In the long run, everyone making an effort benefits. We have new airlines being started e.g. B6 and old airlines failing. Both are good.

Well if and when US Airways finally faulters, I think there will be ample opportunity for both airlines to succeed. I think Northwest will hurt Delta and US Airways business more than ATA's. I think a lot of travelers will stay true to ATA as the hometown favorite or Northwest (business advantage). Hopefully ATA will jump on the chances to do IND-Washington or Boston or Philadelphia if US Airways falters.

May be that is the kind of business practices that arm chair-teenage CEO's would engage in.
Its about making money, which is the purpose of a business. NWA annouced those routes quite a while before ATA announced bankruptcy. NWA has said is many previous press releases that IND is part of thier focus, they have a high number of elite fliers in that city.
ATA and NWA should be able to coexist in IND. I wish all the best to ATA and its employees, they too are trying to make it in a tough market.
