Evacuation Slide Deploy At FL300!

An evacuation slide deployed at FL300 on a FlyNordic flight from UME to ARN tuesday afternoon. Two crew-members sustained minor injuries. The plane, and MD83, landed safely.

Has anyone ever heard of something like this before?

Didn't one deploy inflight before on a BAE 146? I can't remember the details though.

I've heard of a few deploying into the cabin on the ground (Like the UA DC-8 which crashed into a suburb & woodland, a lot of the slides deployed inside.

Holy crap! Wouldn't the entire door have to be blown out of the aircraft to even open? It would break the laws of physics for it to open regularly, the door is designed to be sealed shut at crusing altitude.

I think the compartment for the slide on the MD83 is on the outside and well under the door. I know there is a small door looking thing about 5" below the door, so I don't think it would deploy inside the aircraft. Of course I'm wrong more times than I'm right.....  Big grin

I might be wrong, but I think that little door hides deployable airstairs. Not sure if the MD-80 had them, I know the 737s did and some larger RJs.

That door is for the air stairs. The slides are attached to the iner surface of the door, covered with a fiberglass cover.

The slide is housed in the little "box" on the bottom of the door (see pics). These are more recognizable on larger aircraft (like the 747 door).

A slide can and will deploy inside the aircraft if it is triggered. Can't imagine what triggered it to go off, but it will.

I have heard of a story like this one long time before don't remember the airline but the slide inflated inside the cabin and injured a few crew members and passengers, what saved them was the fact that a cabin crew member took a knife and punctured the slide.

This is also the reason why we DEMAND that no one seats on those compartments, you can't imagine the number of times I had to tell people not to seat on the slides, there are pictograms on the shell that request people not to seat on them. I mean when you go in a park or to the theater, before you seat down somewhere, you do look at the seat no ??? You do notice if there is a gum, or dirt etc, well, PLEASE, do the same on the aircraft, when you go in the galley, have a walk about, LOOK at where you are seating, if there is a sticker that says, DO NOT SEAT !!! It is for a reason !

Yes this a problem on the 747, I continually ask people not to sit there despite the obvious picture/sign saying DO NOT SIT HERE. Often I get a look like I am the jerk.
ON all aircraft I know the slides are attached to the inside of the aircraft door. It is possible for the slide to inflate in the aircraft. I am certain someone could be crused by these things. They are huge and inflate as solid as a rock. I am amzed just how solid and huge they are when have to get into a slide raft in training every year.

There was just a small notice on Aftonbladet.se, where they described pretty much what I wrote here. Apparently the slide deployed into the cabin, knocking over two F/A's.
What are the possibilities of blowing the door open? I guess slim, but still...is it possible? That would have been freaky...!

Its not really possible for the slide to "blow" open the door. The door locking/latching mechanism is not dependent on the slide at all. As long as the slide doesn't slam into the handle and cause it to move, the door integrity remains intact. If the door is somehow unlatched, it is still doubtful it will open. Remember, a plug door has to move in before it can open. The pressurization is forcing the door out against its stops, and the slide deploying will do the same.

I think you'll find there was no chance of the door opening.

The slide and door are independent - it is only the action of opening a door with the door in automatic/girt bar in place that this could happen.

It sounds like the manual inflation handle may have come loose from the bustle (plastic guard over the slide) ,and may have got caught on equipment or something.

Most slides are held in with lots of strong straps - 20 to 40 maybe, so maybe someone had previously inadvertently opened the door in auto,quickly realised their mistake ,and closed it.
They may not have reported it for fear of getting into trouble!!
Some of the straps would have snapped ,and so during the flight with a little expansion - who knows ???!

If a slide falls in in an emergency however,its designed not to inflate, so the last reason maybe that it was just plain faulty.

Hope the crew are ok, they can kill if they inflate inside an aircraft/airbridge - so lets hope they ran, quick!

I was nice at first, and then had to get ugly with people on the 747 about that. I had some bozos sitting at the exit row with their legs on top of the slide pack right next to the door control handle, with the door armed (2 hour missed time slot in a snowstorm). I had to tell them repeatedly to not do that... Finally told em I was going to move them.. it was no longer a problem.

I do believe that QF had an incident inflight with the 747 where one DID deploy, pinning passengers to their seats. Quite a mess from what I heard. Im sure all the QF worshippers will jump in and vehemently deny anything like that could ever happen.

The QF inicident happened on a flight departing from NZ. It was a 747 and the overwing slide went off inflight. It was around the time of the BKK over-run and FCO landing-gear collapse, so it got a lot of publicity down under.

I dont think its possible to have deployed it outside with the doors closed at 31, Kinda reminded me of the guys at boeing that went rafting in washington in a 747 life raft. Problem was it had a locater beacon on it and was picked up as a down aircraft and found by the coast guard... Wonder if anyone lost there jobs over that

Just to let you all know, the doors on an MD-80 are a plug type. This means the door is larger than the opening. It has to move inward first before it can move outward. With close to 8 pounds of pressure per square inch when the aircraft is pressurized, it would take considerably more force than the slide hitting it to open it. The handle would probably break first! Yes, its very possible to inflate a slide inside the aircraft. It happens usually during maintenance, especially with the tail slide, the only fully automatic one on DC-9 family aircraft. As to how it would happen in flight? My best guess is a serving cart or one of the F/A's shoes got caught in the little cloth handle that says 'PULL'. The red one that deploys the slide. The slides are basically aimed into the cabin and upside down from the position they'd be in for normal inflation. I hope this helps out  Smile
