SQ A345 Utilization Rates

It is my understanding that SQ has 5 A345's (correct me please if this is incorrect) with which they do the SIN-LAX, SIN-EWR routes daily and the returns daily. I don't know what the average flight time is working out to be on these routes, but I know that is a lot of flying time!

Does anyone have any information as to the daily utilization rate for these aircraft? I would think that it would be in the 15hr range anyway.

Thanks for any comments.

I read somewhere that after 4pm Singapore local time 4 of 5 A340's is in the air. So it's very high.

SQ also operates the A340-500s twice daily SIN-CGK.

My guesstimate is that the utilization rate is 65% or a bit higher, assuming no cancellations.

Well, I would imagine that they are quite high. In each 24 hour period, 4 of the 5 complete an 18 or so hour flight and I assume that the last one operates the 2 flights to CGK...I need to look at the schedule. Either way, in one 24 hour period, you have four 18 some hour flights and the two CGK flights (2-3 hours each?). So Assuming 2.5 hours a piece, that is around 82 our of 120 hours, which is 68.33% of the day or 16.4 hours a day in the air. Yes, I would say that is pretty decent.

Gotta hand it to the engine makers. If a Mazda RX-7 ran for 16hrs. a day the motor would burn out in no time. On the other hand, a Porsche or Lamborghini motor would probably run forever. Sorry if I am turning this into an automobile thread.

Daily SQ 345 operations consist of the following flights:

SQ019 LAX SIN - block time 18.35
SQ020 SIN LAX - block time 16.05

SQ021 EWR SIN - block time 18.55
SQ022 SIN EWR - block time 17.55

SQ154 SIN CGK - block time 1.35
SQ155 CGK SIN - block time 1.35

SQ162 SIN CGK - block time 1.35
SQ163 CGK SIN - block time 1.35

which makes for a total daily utilization of 77.10. Averaged out over 5 airframes, the theoretical average daily utilization stands at 15 hours and 26 minutes per aircraft. The actual number is likely a bit lower as one of the CGK flights doesn't operate daily and because the block times of the longhaul flights have been calculated very generously. Inbound flights into SIN very often land between 1 and 3 hours early at SIN.

These numbers are not bad at all, but could very well be increased by optimizing utilization. However, such a move would make SQ's A345 operation likely less stable, as the number of available aircraft is relatively low. If the airline would operate a fleet of, say 20 airframes, we would likely see higher utilization numbers than the ones mentioned above.

77% is almost 80% wich equals 4/5th which means that they have a full utilisation of 4 airframes + 1 spare. not bad  Smile
