Best Seats On Finnairs MD11?

Hi!
I'm flying HEL-JFK in December and since I'm flying economy I'm going to try to get a good seat when I check in. Preferably an exit row seat.

Is there anyone with good knowledge about Finnairs MD11's who can tell which row I should opt for?

On my way back I'm flying SAS. On their A330-300, what row is the exit row?

Last time I tried this, I trusted the RG check-in lady at Sao-Paulo's airport in Brazil and I got the row BEHIND the exit row! When I realized it, I couldn't believe that I traded my window seat. And then you weren't allowed to use portable CD-players. What a nightmare trip. Squeezed in a middle isle seat for 11 hours on Varigs MD11 without being able to listen to music. (I forgot to say that the onboard radio wasn't working and there was a disturbance to the film sound)

Cheers
/John

No exit rows - they are in the cattle of the cattle 3-4-3 section. 21ABC JL are nice bulkheads with decent legroom, 22H has unlimited legroom. 27/29JL are very nice crew rest seats usually used for pax on HEL-JFK. Sometimes business rows 6-7 are available for Y.

OH-LGE/F might differ, my examples were from LGA/B/C/D.

Actually, SK seats may be 31AB/GH, don't remember the config exactly. Anyway, row 31 sides. First row Y (21??) isn't bad either.

The best seats on SK are 31 AB or 31GH as mentioned above. Row 21 in Y is also decent, 21 AB and 21 GH.

I just phoned up Finnair, and they couldn't give me a seat before row 44.
:-(

I guess flying Y limits what seat you can choose. But row 44? The flight is in 2 months!

The Finnair website has an MD 11 seat map although I appreciate this may vary across the fleet.

I flew HEL-PVG and back earlier this year on LGD and LGF; great aircraft and very good service although poor IFE.

BTW, my seat both ways was the best in the house...1A!

Whilst we are talking of AY MD11's, I will possibly be flying in 2/05 on AY's seasonal MIA-HEL route, which I believe is an all-Y class service. Can anyone familiar with AY tell me who they allocate the business class seats to?

Or put another way, will oneworld Sapphire status (QF Gold) get me into the C-class seats, or do they just leave them empty on the Miami flights?

Thanks for any info.

Rows 21-30 have slightly better seats so those are reserved for passengers paying higher fares, that is why you can´t reserve them in advance if you have a very cheap ticket. Best seats in eco are on bulkhead-row 21, 22H which has no seat in front of it and 27-28JL which are DC-10 c-cl seats used for crew rest on night flights. Exit-row is 41 which on LGA/B/C/D which have 3 seats on window-side (41ABC) and LGE/F 4 (41DEGH) seats in the middle. 41A has restricted legroom due to exit door slide and on LGE/F there are toilets on both sides of exit-row, so people tend to walk over the people sitting there.

As for the Miami Y-cl service people pay extra for c-cl seats on rows 1-7 and if the "ordinary" m-cl is overbooked the first ones to get c-cl seats are oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members and again people paying the highest fare. In general rows 21-61 are filled to the last seat and any empty seats left on rows 1-7. On Finnair don´t ask for an upgrade at check-in, that is the best way not to get it!

Good chance as QF sapphire I'd say. I have had tons of J upgrades due to my AA Sapphire status. Just make sure to ask for a seat in rows 1-7, otherwise the agents in HEL will be clueless based on my experience.

Yikes! umm..... If you're flying internationally, and can still do this, I suggest if you have some time to try and rebook on another airline.

Finnair MD11 rows 21-29 are much better than LH/KL/AF for example. What's your comparison?

The new Sapphire/Emerald lounge at HEL is excellent too.

I guarantee you will have better service on AY than SK/LH/OS/LO/OK/AF/IB/BA/KL no matter what seat you are in. I don't care for the PTV unless it's an AVOD system myself. AY service to America is not bad at all, although you will get the "America minded" FAs unlike on Asian runs.

I would like to see some facts or comparisons after such a comment... I can definitely recommend AY and their MD-11s over any major European airline... And I have tried a lot other options as well than AY.

Is the flight usually full?

Yes it is... a lot of transit pax from United States to the Baltic countries, Moscow, St. Petersburg and Scandinavia and vice versa. However, winter is the low season of Trans-Atlantic traffic and therefore more seats might be available.

Best Regards,
FinnWings
