ORD2PHL-If I am not mistaken, D2 and D4 were the two gates that the City of Philadelphia stripped from US Airways...I'm not surprised at all that they were given to Southwest, if they were...

The two gates at D were given to WN after being taken from US. Thus WN now has 6 gates at PHL and starting today will have 41 flts

Oh man, those were the exPiedmont gates too. Why did PHL strip those gates from US.

It interesting seeing WN's presence here in Philly. Today for the first time I saw 2 WN 737s take off back to back and have seen back to back landings several times.
Does US have any more gates in D, or were those the only ones?
Jeff
P.S. I also saw one of their 737-700s land on 17/35 for first time a couple of weeks ago...weird seeing that instead of the normal Dash 8s and CRJ using that runway.

D2 and D4 were US' only gates in D...also mainline-size jets landing on 17/35 isn't terribly uncommon these days, FYI...
I wonder how this will work for transit pax on WN since to get between D and E you need to reclear security...or will they be starting a shuttle service like US has between C and F?

I was spotting at PHL for a little today and saw a decent number of WN planes but none at D. Saw aircraft approach for landing on 26, 27R, and 27L at the same time. It was pretty impressive. They were actually landing simultaneously on 27R and 27L for a while since not many planes were taking off. Also saw a few RJ's land on 26. Surprisingly not one aircraft used 17/35 for the hour and a half that I was there.

For the past couple of weeks we have watched the gradual transormation of these gates from US to WN.
US lost the gates when they failed to pay the rent on them. At least that was the rumor.
When I left on vacation Oct 16th these gates had been stripped of every thing from US, but nothing was moved in from WN. When I got back everything was ready for WN. That was Friday. I guess they opened up on Saturday.
As for tranfering from D to E that is going to be tough for pax. But they are adding another lane of security in D. They have cloed the coffee shop that was located just ont he other side of Security so that they can revamp the checkpoint.

Also a note for connecting paxs, Southwest's business model is to mainly draw on O&D paxs. While there may be a few ppl connecting between WN flts in PHL, i'll bet most are O&D passengers thus transfering between terminals is not necessary.

Can't they rearrange the airlines further and move DL or someone else out of E so all WN flights could be in the same place?

Moving is expensive, so unless the lease has expired the only way you will see another carrier being moved is with either WN or the airport paying the related costs. DL's lease expires in 2006 and it's generally expected that they will be required to move at that time to accommodate WN.

7E72004,
DL has 4 gates (E1, E3, E5, & E7) and NW has 3 gates (E2, E4, & E6) plus they have been at PHL a lot longer than WN. Why disrupt the gate operations for 2 or more carriers for only a 'temporary' establishment?
I mentioned this on previous threads: WN getting gates D2 & D4 is only a temporary measure until either the Terminal E gate expansion is completed or if US shuts down, WN decides to transfer all its operations to B or C if it wanted to.

My understanding was that US Airways wasn't using its two gates in Terminal D for the number of daily departures required under their leases, so the airport ended up taking back the gates. Of course, it would have been easy enough for US to put a half-dozen daily flights at each gate so there had to be some reason they gave up the gates.
To quote the Philly Inquirer story from September 28:
"At the airport, officials said yesterday that they had told US Airways that they wanted to reclaim two gates in Terminal D that the airline had not been fully using and had been on month-to-month leases."
The same story does state that US missed its August rent payment to the airport as well (and owed the city about $4 million).
I'd surmise that WN would (for now) mostly use those gates for evening arrivals with few connection possibilities and morning push departures.
As far as I know, most (or all) of the gate leases at PHL expire in 2006. If US Airways survives until then, it will be interesting to see how everything gets reallocated then.

Additionally the Airport plans to revamp over the next two years the entire D and E checkin area and create one huge check point for both terminals with a connecting hall on the secure side of the terminal connecting E to D and therefore the rest of the airport.

I recently heard a rumor that in the new UA schedules that will be loaded this week ORD-PHL has been drastically cut. Is this true. I can't imagine UA retreating on this route that much with WN competing from MDW with 5 daily in March '05. If frequencies are cut will some 733's and airbus aircraft finally be upgraded to 752's.
