Anybody who's ever been to ZRH or has seen/flown them elsewhere will agree that it was a great time with them.

Very sad day. Now only 4 scheduled PAX MD-11 operators:

-Finnair
-Varig
-KLM
-JAL (will be gone soon, or is it gone?)

Was the last flight into ORD? I saw one fly over my house the other day on it's way out, I don't recall when they started flying the MD11 back (it was an A330 for a bit), but I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of one before they stopped flying them. Farewell MD11...

JL's last commercial flight was as mentioned HKG-NRT on Oct. 12. The last MD-11 JA8582 was doing a test flight on Oct. 31 for the flight back to the US for storage or where ever they are doing the cargo conversion.

Very sad, 2 former MD-11 operators (LX and JL) retiring their last MD-11 within a month.

And speaking of last, there was a ceremony of the last B757 built at Renton not too long ago.

Alitalia has recalled some of its stored MD-11s into service, so it is still an MD-11 operator!

Actually the fire truck was bigger than it appears on the photo above. When you have a camera with less zoom (like mine), this is what you get:

Can anyone tell me why the MD-11 is being retired? It is such a great aircraft. Even though it's operating efficiencies may not have been as advertised, wouldn't it be cheaper to hold on to it than to purchase new A/c. Especially, if it is going to be replced by the 'lame duck' A340-300. After all Northwest still operates the DC-10 and it is one airline that is hanging in there-financially speaking.

A great bird, sorry to see her go. The crash off Nova Scotia played a part in the types demise, I think. Also MDD had dvelopment and payload/range problems which led to fewer orders.

For one, the A340-300 is alot more fuel efficient than the MD-11. The MD-11 didn't meet the range specifications promised when the project was launched back in (was it?) the late 80s/ early 90s.

Thirsty engines and today's rising fuel costs aren't worth it for LX. If you were an airline, would you rather fly a nice looking plane or one that saved you money?

Dreamcraft, the MD-11 was by far the loudest aircraft all around and has increasingly become a weapon in the hands of the anti-airport folks.

KL certainly flies MD11s to Bonaire, and then on to Lima and Quito. I had the pleasure of traveling on three of them on AMS-LIM-BON-AMS a year ago.
