Flying Losing It's Glamour ?

At a recent Crew Management conference held for airlines all over the world it was mentioned that there is a trend towards less people trying to become a pilot for airlines due to the job not being found as glamourous anymore.

Do any of you see flying as less glamourous nowadays than what it used to be, and if so, why ?

p.s. Airlines aren't actually getting less people being inetrested in pilot careers, but (as they say) less good people. In other words, the smart cookies of the world feel that they can advance their career better in other fields.

Now-a-days its just Taxi, Takeoff, Cruise(autopilot), land, taxi. And today's pilots only have to do 3/4, but back then, they had to do 4/4, which was much harder BUT it will never stop me from wanting to become a United Airlines pilot!!!

I'm not sure about being less glamorous, but I know that there is a shortage in pilots these days, even for the majors, as they try to find more pilot.

There is a less flow of people becoming pilots now then before. I too want to become a pilot.

I would question the source of your statement. That is about one of the stupidest comments I have read on the forum. And it sounds more like it is a personal feeling than a comment made at an international gathering. Flying han't been glamorous since the ninteen forties. Your first paragraph completely contradicts your last. Either there are less people becoming pilots or not. I would like the source of this information to lend any credibility towards this post.

Stu, my learned friend, I have no problem with you perhaps not agreeing with my post but I think there really is no need to call it 'about the stupidest comment you have read on the forum'. The writer of the said post might just take that the wrong way and find your comments somewhat insulting. But lets move on....

As far as my source goes, it's an article that appeared in the last issue of Flight Internation (a leading aerospace magazine, you may have heard of it ?) . I have merely summarized the article in my post above. The conference I was talking about was the Flight Internation Crew Management conference, held in Amsterdam on the 25th and 26th of March (you didn't honestly think I would mention some fictitious conference, would you?)

As far as my first paragraph contradicting my last, well, not really. I was merely being more detailed. In the first paragraph I said that airlines were getting less people, which (I know) isn't actually true, they are getting less good people. The net result being the same.

Hoping to have sufficiently answered your queries concerning my post I shall now move on to other, more interesting, things.

I'm Chill Baby. If it's not you comments then theres no need for you to take offense. Your just conveying some other idiots statements. It's ubsurd for the author to make such a statement. Flying is a profession. We do it because it's a cool way to make money. Generaly flying has become the public bus system. The standard economy class flying public are made up of people that if you installed straps like they have on busses they would take it to save $10 on a ticket. I stand at the cockpit door to bid farewell to our beloved passengers at the end of the flight and I see they respect us no more than a NY cab driver.

No offence taken then. I must say though that I do and do not agree with your comments.

I do agree about the traveling public not always being exactly too terribly cultured and sophisticated. Since, as you said, air travel was made affordable to mostly everybody respect and esteem for the pilots (and let's not forget cabin crew) has been lowered considerably.

I do not agree with you that it's just a profession and a cool way to make money. At least for many pilots it's not. Remember some flying indeed is more glamourous than other, going long haul to far away exotic destinations (with not just cattle class pax) may already sound more exiting than flying a shuttle service. I am the first to acknowlegde that things rarely are as cool and glamourous as they seem but for many pilots I'm sure there is something more to the job than just the money.

To call everyone at the Flight International conference idiots does seem a bit short sighted and ignorant though. Especially if you haven't read the full article.

If you all are worried about prestige in flying, just fly to Asia. Air crew are one of the most highly respected professions there.

The solution is simple. The industry just has to use some of the dirty tricks other proffessions such as densitry do. keep the club exclusive. Have only about the same number of new pilots obtaining their liecenes every year as about the same number of older pilots retireing. Make it very difficult to be accepted to study avaition. Make it a university degree - compulory.

And then, airlines, keep prices a little higher. If you stop the working class from flying you keep it all that more elite. I don't mean to sound like a snob, but it is true. And then, you will find that the general Quility of things improves,and people regard it as glamours once more. It is glamorous in many parts of the world today, i think it is Airlines like southwest that are to blame for dropping prices and standards. Even if you have specials like cheap stand by tickets, keeping the standards of service high keeps the company and professions images high. Of course, if you don't think its good enough anymore, go to university, get a PHD, and then try to get an executive posistion.
