Hello All I am from Little Rock but now I live in Washington. I flew into LIT a couple of weeks ago and notice that the end of RWY 4R they are curving the road further around the Runway and it looks like they may be Extending the runway by about a 1,000 ft or so I have no clue I have checked out there website and haven't seen anything about a Extension but it looks like they are only in the Beginning stages of something.. I would like to know if any of you have any info on that for me..

Thanks,
DeltaMD-88

Yeah Delta. They are extending the runway about 1100ft.(i guess) to the length of the other commercial runway. They are having to get rid of that road that wraps around the end of that runway and are relocating it about 1,000ft. back.

It is sort of complicated because there is that big creek there between the interstate and the airport. They had to build a concrete wall that is about 50ft. tall to hold back the ground so it wouldn't go into the water. They also have to relocate the CAT III or IV landing lights and add more to the runway. I expect it to be shut down for a while they work on the actual runway.

I'll try to take some pics of it next time I'm out there.

It's an over-run area made of 'foam concrete'. One was added on 4L/22R also. I was just out there an hour ago doing some video taping...had to weave my way through the construction...also looks like a fountain is being added at the entrance to the airport.

The foam concrete issue came up shortly after the AA 1420 accident.

K...found an article on it...

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — Little Rock National Airport (LIT) will receive a $5
million grant from the FAA to extend Runway 04R. An American Airlines flight
overran the 7,200- by 150-foot runway during a thunderstorm before hitting
lighting stanchions and breaking apart. The June 1,1999, crash fatally
injured 11 people, including the pilot.

Here is an E-Mail from the public affairs guy that I got back in April:

Yes, the plan is to extend 4R/22L to basically the same length as the other commercial service runway to further faciliate the preferential arrival/departure flow proceedure.

Currently, Roosevelt Road is being relocated to allow for that extension.

IIRC, 4R/22L was originally constructed because there was alot of noise pollution in the neighborhoods north of the airport. Pilots tend to choose the longer runway over a shorter one and so the older one is still used more because it is longer. Extending this runway will encourage pilots to choose it instead of 4L/22R.

I hope so. There's a great spotting place there. There are no good ones on the other side since they extended it. For many years I'd lay on the hood of my car and let those old loud turbojets go right over my head. Can't do that anymore unless you want to lay on the train tracks!  Sad

Have any idea what they're gonna do with the old Southwest call center building?

There are a couple of good spotting places at the end of 4L/22R and 36/18. The spotting area on the side of 4R/22L will still be open though. As far as the SW Reservation center IDK. Does anybody know when they will close 4R/22L?
