I was flying out of JFK on November 1st, at 7pm, and there seemed to be some unusual runway assignments going on. The main take off runway was 31 L, which we used. But suddenly out of the blue a Delta 767 (I think) took off from the other side (13R). And then I spotted a plane take off from 13 L sa well. Can anyone explain?
Also, second question: can anyone describe how the runway center lights are made? Given that the aircraft nose wheels go right over them, how do they prevent from breaking?

The centerline lights I've seen are in metal cases, flush mounted in the runway. They have cutouts with lenses that focus the light down the approach path at either end of runway. The metal case takes the weight and abuse.
