B6 In YWG

Looking at the JFK flight arrivals this afternoon...and found this

And it made me wonder what in the heck would a B6 plane be doing in YWG other than the obvious (charter)..

If memory serves I believe that AC has a maintenance contract to do work on B6 A320s in YWG.

AC does maintenance on B6's 320s in YWG. In fact B6 had a meeting with AC maintenance in YUL the other day.

Aside from the regular maintenance AC does for B6 in YWG, there is some kind of special program of upgrades in progress on 50 B6 320s right now. So there are a lot of planes shuffling between JFK and YWG.

Are those the IFE upgrades? I would have expected those to take place in MCO. That said, I just flew on N583JB the other day, it had the new system-- much improved, I much say!

Does America West still get their planes fixed at YWG? I remember i was there at the AC maintenance facility in 2001 and was amazed to see America West planes...and not only that, but more of them than Air Canada's own planes.

The majority of Air Canada's maintenance is done at Toronto, and Montreal.

The Winnipeg Maintenance base is only kept open as a requirement of the Air Canada Public Participation Act, which ensures that even though a private corporation, Air Canada's control will never be out of the Government's hands.

Are you AC? You've just insulted 800 A320 AME's and technicians. Air Canada does almost all of its A320 maintenance in YWG, and has from day 1. Before that it was 727's.

YWG does AC C-phase checks, H-checks, and occasionally mods on AC A320 series aircraft. The facility is a major competitor in the North American A320 maintenance business.

YWG is currently carrying out jetBlue C-checks and satellite TV mods (I believe it's the IFE mods referred to above, but not sure). There are three or four JB aircraft around at any given time right now. In addition, there are maintenance contracts with Skyservice and USA3000. There are also a few ILFC aircraft there waiting for space in the hangar (ex-V-bird and Volare).

Since you clearly don't know what you're talking about, I'll also mention that Toronto is primarily a line maintenance base, and a paint shop. No heavy maintenance is done there (except some mods, maybe?). Montreal does A330's, A340's, and CRJ's. Vancouver, which was inherited from CAIL, does 767's, a bit of A320 overflow work, and I believe some A330/A340, but not sure of that.

America West no longer has their A320 work done in YWG.

It is true that the Winnipeg maintenance base is mentioned in the ACPPA, but that's pretty irrelevant these days.

Stick to things you actually know about, and I'll do the same, okay?



The primary function of the design engineer is to make things difficult for the manufacturer and impossible for the AME.

Oh stop it. This is an obsolete, blatant, federally mandated protectionist policy.

Considering how much 319/320/321 traffic transits YYZ compared to YWG, I'd say the fact that the YWG mx base exists is because it's required by law rather than an efficient practice.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not doubting the reputation and quality of AC maintenance, it is THE best in the world. But simply because there has always been a base in YWG does not mean it's the most cost efficient, effective place to locate it within the AC system.

Right ... and before that it was Viscounts, and before that it was DC-3s. And not since the Viscount trans-prairie routes, has it been necessary, nor efficient.

Note, that I did not say the Winnipeg Maintenance Base did not exist, I said the only reason it does exist, is because of the Air Canada Public Participation Act. Or do you really think it makes sense that the A320/A319/A321 maintenance be performed in YWG, when the majority of flying is in YYZ?

Also note, I did not insult any AME's nor Technicians. Air Canada continues to have among the highest quality maintenance in the world, its just a shame it is not located near Air Canada's aircraft.

(For the information of our colleagues not familiar with Canadian Geography, Winnipeg is 1500 km west of Toronto.)

Well, can I make some suggestions here to take the side of 320tech. It doesn't really matter if the location is near where your aircraft are. They fly for a reason. AA going to MCI (yes I know it's because of TWA, but still); even America West going to YWG. And now, USA3000 going to YWG as 320tech suggests. YWG is much further from Phoenix than it is from Toronto.

Actually YWG is an excellent place from a geographic standpoint. Righ smack dab in the middle of the country. Also doing maintenance in a lesser used airport makes a lot of sense, Less congestion. Then there are are the MUCH lower costs for the facilities. Quality of life for the employees (except for the cold LOL)

all Jetblue planes get there LTV mod and "C" checks in YWG. Usually from there they come back to JFK.

Many airlines have mtc bases in secondary centres. The real estate at hub airports is often very expensive. In Air Canada's case, the Winnipeg base exists, and Air Canada views third party maintenance as a growing and profitable business. Therefore, even if the ACPPA were to be abolished, who is to say AC would close the base? AC also has a good relationship with the Manitoba government, and I suspect that if AC wanted to modernize that base to handle new projects, it could have access to government funds. Moreover, as AC begins to get all of those Embraers, and total fin count at AC begins to rise, Winnipeg might be the ideal place to do maintenance on those planes, many of which will be going through Winnipeg or could be routed through Winnipeg.

You are all very correct, however, the real estate already exists in Toronto, (and Montreal for that matter). Air Canada's Toronto facilities are the combination of real estate from both Air Canada and Canadian Airlines. (The facilities previously owned by Wardair have been sold).

Also, just some figures to bat around, right now Air Canada's A320 fleet transits Winnipeg only 19% a week, vice Toronto at 100% a week, or Montreal at 94% a week.

But, I do agree with reference to the Embraers. It would appear looking at present fleet plans, that they will be doing a lot of prairie flying.
