Had the great pleasure of flying a dc9 - 10 from DTW to FNT last Friday -- flight attendants were great, they couldn't find anything -- too many little holes and cubbies -- but they did find a good bottle of South African wine -- the plane just hopped off the ground (really amazing when you think how old it is), and landed just like a little lady in Flint -- too bad RJ's, CRJ's, are not as quick and graceful and the old DC9 -10 -- we're losing something here -- one of the best planes ever made -- whole DC9 series, but my special favorite is the 10

I always liked the 10 series as well but there was one fallacy i didnt know about until we lost one.... It had been snowing and iceing,and the plane had been deiced,,, as the plane hit V1 frozen chunks of ice sitting on the wing were ingested right into the engines at about 75 feet up it fell right back on the runway...totally destroying the a/c but the crew were able to get out safely. If you look at the 10 series and compare it to say a 32 series or md,s you will notice how close that engine is to the wing compared to the others, All that trash on the wings is sucked right into those engines.....

Now that i think about didnt southern have one go down on a hwy in alabama or georgia..it had ingested so much ice in a hail storm both engines had a compressor stall...and he was over 10,000 at one point,but just could make it...

I flew on a -10 on Midwest Express, before the name change to just Midwest. Flew her from IAD to MKE. She was quick, nimble, and yes, she "jumped" off the runway too. I was quite surprised about that. I had flown on a few NWA and MWE DC-9-30s just wekks before this -10 trip, all of those t/o's were nose up for quite a length off runway, and a slow initial climb. The -10 just seemed to "jump" into the air - -full load too!

I even videotaoped the t/o for my own video collection - I still watch it just amazed at the -10s "sports-car" like abilities.

Your one of the very few, relatively speaking, who've been lucky enough to catch a flight on this little sprite of an a/c.

SO242, that attempted to land on old Georgia Highway 92 between Kennesaw and Dallas, GA, at the site of New Hope Church Civil War Battlefield, on April 4, 1977 was a DC-9-31. It was vectored into severe thunderstorm by ATC that contained huge hail stones that shattered the windscreen and damaged both engines. ATC did not tell the pilots about the airport at Cartersville, GA which they probably could have glided to. Instead they were vectored to Dobbin AFB in Marietta, but couldn't make it there. In a great display of airmanship, the pilots landed the airplane on a two lane highway that is far from level, and would have made it, but the wing tip hit a gas station and that was all she rote.

Well, I cannot remember the last time that I have been on a -10, but I loved the -10 and -30 as well...especially the -10. Like others said, I loved how that thing just jumped off the ground. Nothing like riding those things for the short hop from DSM to MSP back in the day when the family flew NW.

There was an article in Airliners (I think it was them) some time back when SAS were retiring their DC-9-20s. The -20s, IIRC, were similar to the -10s, but with some feature of the -30s...engines? Cannot remember, but the pilots that they talked to used to love flying the -20 because they loved the feel and the power of the thing and how it seemed somewhat more like a fighter aircraft (to a point) than a commercial jet).

The -20 did indeed have the -30 engines and a longer wingspan than the -10. A true rocket.

Funny, but even the flight attendants like them -- they're constantly confused, the galley doesn't resemble any other dc-9 -- the first class cabin has only 14 seats, the coat closet fits about 5 jackets (tops), but the flight attendants go all out -- even on a short flight like DTW - FNT to do their all -- will be a sad day this January when the last of the 10s are gone -- but, the rest of the 9's will be around for a long time -- and just maybe, NWA will allow those of us who love the 10's one last flight (even to the desert)

Thank you. I was pretty sure that the wingspan was different, but I couldn't be sure. I thought that was what they said, but it seemed weird to increase the wingspan for a slight stretch like the -10 to a -30, so I was not sure. Thanks for clearing that up for me!  Smile

Just for an added trivial bonus: the DC-9-15 was basically a -10 but with added fuel tanks and higher weights overall.

I was told that the -20 was a special variant built for Swissair. It had the DC9-10 fuselage with the -30 wing(including slats). Don't know about the engines. The DC9-10 had JT8D-7's and most of the 30's had the -9 engine variant.

The -10 did have a fighter-like feel. It has a great roll rate and was had a lot of power for its size. Great VFR airplane.TC

Yeah, the -10 is my favorite of the DC9. I usually dont care what a/c I fly on, but when I have the chance to fly on a -10, I go out of my way. Flew one from PIT to DTW back in March. Absolute pleasure. I felt like I was actually flying. The plane felt solid, the ride was smooth, and I felt more secure for some reason.

Pilots called the -10 the "Pocket Rocket" because of its power-to-weight ratio. Only four left in the fleet now, and all will be gone in January. Be nice if at least one could end up in a museum.

For the FNT-DTW route, does anybody know which flights the -10 covers? If I am not mistaken, I always seem to ride on a -30. It would be great to fly on the -10 a couple of more times before January.

I had a trip on the -10 last month DTW-MBS,my first DC-9 flight in many years. I should have snagged the safety card. A great flight on a classic jet, and a great first trip with Northwest.
It was SAT-DTW-MBS and back with a -50 on the MBS-DTW leg.

The DC-9-14/15 is my favorite version of the 9's. Sadly I never had the opportunity to fly onboard one. I have one DC-9-21 flight, which was very, very nice...

The -21 was specially built for SAS,not Swissair.It had the -10 fuselage with the larger,slatted wing of the -30 and the JT-8D-11 of the -41.Late in their carreers they were hush-kitted and lost a little of their sprightly performance.We called them the DC-9 "Hot Rod".They had better performance all over than the F-84G fighters used by the Royal Norwegian Air Force in the 50's,the F-86F was only marginally better except for climb rate.
I was priviledged to log some 500 hours+ in this variant.

The -15 is considered as a -10 too (as well as the -14 and the -11) and was only sold outside of the USA (early costumers were KLM and Swissair) until the weight restrictions for aircraft with 2-man-cockpit were changed. The most common DC-9-10 in the USA was the -14 (Delta, Eastern, TWA, ...), but that changed when the -15s in Europe were phased out. As far as I know, there were only 3 DC-9-11 built and at least one of them was in service with Northwest. Does anybody remember which aircraft it was and if it is among the last in service?

They had DC-9-51s. One was ordered new from MDC and after it was written off, two ex AVENSA DC-9-51 replaced it. Unfortunately, Ghana went out of business and the DC-9s are stored as well as the DC-10s.

I flew on a DC-9-14 last Wednesday from LAN to DTW. Very nice flight. Very nice plane. I looked up the registration and the plane was first delivered in 1966. It was in very good shape even though it was almost 40 years old!

25 Nwaclc : NWA actually has 5 dc9-10 still flying ships 9138/9153/9154/9155/9156. Some of these -10 a/c have less cycles then the -30 still flying! NWACLC
