Does Anybody know what will be the schedules and aircraft used?

Great to see QR expanding into the North African market. That'll give them 4 destinations; CAI, LXR, TUN and ALG.

Great news. Interesting to see how they are pursuing two markets that Emirates has not entered yet, Algiers and Tunis.

I expect that Emirates will eventually serve them though.

Hi,

i think QR will use the A330 (-200 or -300) for the flights.
The A340-600 will possibly fly DOH-MEL.

greets

QR into CPT before Emirates?

Wow, never thought that this could happen. I wonder if EK are stuck trying to "re-write" the bilateral air services agreement between South Africa and the UAE. I believe that they were unsuccessful in obtaining rights for a third daily into JNB, which was supposed to extend to Cape Town.

Any news on the frequencies and equipment for the DOH to JNB/CPT flights?

EK's lack of service to CPT so far indeed has to do with the restrictions imposed by the current South Africa-UAE bilateral, which limits EK to two dailies, frequencies the airline prefers to use for its nonstop DXB-JNB flights. A tag on to CPT for one of the existing flights is presumably not on the cards for EK, as the flights are doing just fine as terminators to JNB. So, as long as the SA-UAE bilateral doesn't get updated, I doubt we'll see any EK metal in CPT. If it happens, I expect them to see on a DXB-CPT nonstop rather than a DXB-JNB-CPT, though.

Thanks HB-IWC,

I must add my six pence to your comment; EK's original plan for CPT was an initially linked service via Jo'burg. A dedicated non-stop was to follow later. This information did come "first-hand"...

Saying this, whatever happened to GF and their plans to return to JNB. They released a number of press-releases mentioning the return of the AUH to JNB services this time last year? Silence since....

It's a matter of time before QR gets more competition on the route, I know for a fact that EY (Etihad Airways) is rapidly preparing to commence flights from AUH to JNB.

No doubt that QR will pinch a number of EK passengers, I know of a few who do not like EK but have little choice in reaching the Middle East direct.

Good luck to them all and may the competition begin! Hope SAA wakes up sometime soon! There's "only" approx. 70K South Africans in the Middle East, 40K in the UAE alone. I'd love to see their planes in DXB sometime soon again.

I think that QR is already present in TIP and CMN !!!

Would the flight to TUN continue to ALG ? I think this decision from QR will urge EK to do the same, no ?!

MOE,

I would say that it's not a priority.

SYD will have double daily EK and dailt GF. 21 pw
MEL has double daily with EK, and 3pw QR, moving to daily. 21 pw.

going into SYD now would be very difficult for QR.

Has it been confirmed that MEL flight will go via BKK? I've been hoping that they would fly via KUL instead. Looking at the present schedule, KUL receives more QR service than BKK & SIN.

KEno,

Yes, my advice is that QR has confirmed MEL services over BKK.
In effect, the MEL service will simply be an extension of existing DOH-BKK services.

Only TG services BKK-MEL, and that is with old MD11 aircraft, or one-stop via SYD, so this is the least competitive option for QR in entering MEL.

I think they will do quite well... Yields on MEL-BKK are better than MEL-KUL as well...

I heard about a year ago that QR recieved 5th freedom rights for Colombo to MEL.
Can anyone confirm/comment that?

JoFMO,

Qatar did request 5th freedom rights over CMB, but they got zero!

UL is contemplating a return to Australia. And given EK's shareholding in UL, you can understand why the Sri Lankan authorities weren't forthcoming.
