Will The EU Takeover Agreements Someday?

Greetings everyone. With the European Union gaining more power through out Europe, I was just wondering if someday the the European Union will be the ones negotiating bi-lateral agreements on airport use or stuff like that.Thank you for your time and replies.

The EU already has these powers. In June 2003 the EU Council gave the Commission a mandate to start discussions with the US on a pan European - US joint air transport agreement. This follows on from a judgment by the European Court which ruled that the various "Open Skies" treaties entered into by member countries with the US breached the EU treaty (see http://europa.eu.int/comm/transport/air/international/dev_en.htm for more details).

Having said that, until such time an agreement between EU and US can be reached, the Commission has decided to allow the current Open Sky treaties to stand. A rather pragmatic approach from the Commission (for once), as the alternative could have had a detrimental affect on the various airline alliance, namely, they could have been held in breach of US Anti Trust laws - the Open Sky treaties being a precondition for any Anti Trust immunity such alliances were granted.
