I know this is a very morbid topic, but I've always wanted to ask...
1) What's you favorite air crash scene?
2) What's the most realistic air crash scene?
3) What's the most realistic aircraft movie?
Please mods dont move this to the Aviation Polls and Prefs just cause of Question 1.
For me Question 1 would be the Windsor DC-8 Crash in Die Hard 2, that was quite spectacular, as far as most movies go. The crashes in the made-for-TV movie "Freefall" were pretty cool too.

I would have to say the scene from 'Alive' was pretty entertaining. And of course the one from 'castaway' was entertaining as well, although not very realistic.

Although you don't really see a closeup of the plane "crashing," I'd say Final Destination probably had the best crash scene, especially b/c of the eery lead in to takeoff.
Now for the WORST crash I've ever seen, that would have to be Air Force One. The entire big budgeted movie was filled with great special effects and good action sequences, but the end sequence (with the 747 crashing in the water) looked too computer generated with HORRIBLE physics.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you.

I agree, Air Force One, was the worst, more unrealistic movie I ever see, I laughed so much when Harrison Ford was passing form plane to plane on that rope So unrealistic....
A very good airplane movie was (I don´t remember the name). The one which was about a 744 flying to USA with this terrorist and a bomb staring Kurt Russell? The rescue team gets to the 744 by a plane with the "bridge". In the movie, Steven Segal was also, and he dies when this "bridge" collapses. Very good indeed.
A very bad movie as well was Passanger 54 (or whatever). The only good part was Halle Berry

Adam

The King Air 200 on Jurasic Park 3...They took off and the T Rex jumped out in front of them...nice crash. Also the ones on "Air America."

I enjoyed the F/A-18 Super Hornet & SAM scene from Behind Enemy Lines. I thought the Beaver crash in The Edge was pretty spectacular.

I also vote for the FIGHTCLUB crash scene... Very brief, but it has that pit of the stomach feeling like "Yeh, that's probably pretty much what it would be like to be on a disintegrating airliner..."

For me its a tie between 'Alive' and 'Fight Club'...Final Destination a solid 2nd place. Morbid, but entertaining. I guess we a.netters like them for the same reason the general public likes horror movies..we like to scare ourselves. Partially the reason I am such an NTGEO "Air Emergency" fan.

I don't know what the movie's called, but my "favorite" would be the one highlighting the Eastern Airlines crash in the Everglades, South Florida.
The actual crash was on Dec.29th, 1972 and involved a L1011 flying out of JFK into Miami.
The scenes looked pretty realistic.

For shear realism it was a DH Beaver/Otter(?) tumbling on a lake landing in the 1982 Charlton Heston release "Mother Lode" Why? - It was real.
The pilot was flying a passenger (hence it qualified as an airliner) in to remote Canadian lake. Gorgeous day and long panning screen filling scene as it set down on almost mirror surface and a float digs in. Bang. Cartwheel to total disintegration. It wasn't supposed to happen but was so spectacular and well filmed the script was changed (completely) to keep it in. Yes, he lived I believe, otherwise I'm sure it would not have been included.

I think that the crash in the movie "Fearless" starring Jeff Bridges (his personality was changed after surviving the air crash and this was the theme for the remainder of the film) seemed realistic to me.

Was there not a Action film that actually had a helicopter crash, unintentional but it managed to kill the pilot and I think 2 child actors along with another adult actor. From what I can remember when it appeared on the news was during an action scene the helicopter was caught by the pyrotechnics as it flew low coming down on the children while they were running.
I'm positive the scene was never used but I've no idea what film it was or whether the film ever made it to the theatres.

The mid air sequence involving the flat spin in top gun. The stunt pilot in that movie died because of it. I think he did the weight and balance of his Pitts without the camera, and it would have been able to pull out of the flat spin had the weight and moment been correct. but the camera in the nose of the airplane brought it too far forward and he was unable to pull out.
I think that was the best crash sequence in movie history
but yeah the fight club scene was pretty awesome as well.

For me the best scenes:
Die Hard 2--Windsor DC8 and Evergreen 747
Final Destination--747
Jurassic Park 3 -- King Air 200 (and that was a Spinosaurus not T-Rex)
Cliffhanger--DC9 and Lockheed Jetstar

"Twilight Zone: The Movie" It was rewritten and the scene removed. Major lawsuits resulted. Major changes made (supposedly) in movie production safety. I believe James Cameron was the director involved.

Burg400, you are thinking of "The Twilight Zone" movie. Actor Vic Morrow and two Vietnamese-American children were killed when the pyrotechnics malfunctioned, causing the helicopter above to fall to the ground, crushing the three.
There actually is video of this scene, but the deaths are not visible. Most of Vic Morrow's scenes were already filmed, and his shots were left in. As for the rest of the movie, it made it to theatrical release, but did not do very well (for the most part, it was an awful movie!!).
My favorite crash scene is from "Cliffhanger", a movie which made "Die Hard 2" look like Shakespeare. I found myself hoping all the characters would die just so they'd SHUT UP!! I mean, were all of Lithgow's henchman stupid enough to believe that he'd share ANY of the money with them? I guess all the budget went into that amazing mountain crash.
