Specific Cargo Containers For Each Aircraft?

I came across this picture as it was linked to a post and noticed that the gentlemen operating the loader is loading a bin marked "A340-600 ONLY" into a 747-400.

My question is, why would they bother marking this bin if it can also go in other aircraft?

Also, do the same bins always stay with the same aircraft? For example, when LOT Polish Airlines flies WAW-YYZ they take 6 bins for example, but do those same 6 bins return with them on the YYZ-WAW leg?

The airline will use nearly all of it's containers on any other A/C, just so long as the A/C can handle them. Not to big or not to small

So can't answer the specific question but any lower deck ULD that fits on an A340 should fit a 744.

No the bins don't stay with the same a/c. If you are on an inbound a/c and it has a fairly short turnaround you will probably see the outbound ULDs (especially for cargo) sitting waiting on the ramp when you arrive. The inbounds will generally get taken off, unloaded and then used for a later flight. They may even end up going on another carrier somewhere. managing ULD fleets is a bit of a task for any airline - they end up in all sorts of weird and wonderful places!

A colleague of mine was into BGW not long after the war ended for a recce and there next to the cargo warehouse was an LH main deck container (an AMA). Given the last time that LH flew into BGW must have been several years before I wonder if LH had just given up on ever getting it back.

Anyway, some enterprising US soldiers had turned it into a shower block! Big grin

OK - thanks, seen the picture. Strange - this is an AKE which is a pretty standard lower deck container. It will quite easily fit in a 747 (in fact it will fit 747 / 767 / 777 / A330 / A340 without a problem).

Can't think why VS would have it marked up for 346 only  Confused
