380 Upper Deck

There have been quite a few comments on this forum about the 380 upper deck, and how it looks to have very sloping walls, low height, and be a bit cramped.

Is there anybody out there who has actually seen the mockup in real life, and if so can they comment on it?

Someone made the comment that it appears the engineers are working on a raised platform in the A380 pictures that have just come out. Seems raised as they are working on the overhead bins / or ceiling.

Well, if you look at the drawings (http://www.airbus.com/product/a380_cabin_layouts.asp) of the upper deck the outer parts seem to slope quite a bit, but the deck is wide for the number of seats so the window seat will not really have a low ceiling. There might, however, be some space between the seat and the actual fuse (by the floor, that is).

Compare:
A380 upper deck seating is 2-4-2, with a width of 19'5" or 5,92.
A330/340 seating is also 2-4-2, with a width of 17'4" or 5,28m

Tthat's over two feet more with the same number of seats. So any low ceilinged section at the edges will not be a problem. Just leave the last foot clear.

With all due respect, I find this hard to believe since, if you do look at the pictures,
and you imagine the workers actually sitting, the windows seem exactly at the
right level. The floor might be covered by protective sheets or something similar,
but I do not believe it's raised.

While the floor may not be raised, the photographer may be using a medium-focal length telephoto lens which would compress perspective. The first interior picture (see the link AA777223ER posted) looks like it is more accurate with respect to perspective. One man is on a step stool and another (the one to the right) is reaching above his head into the area between the center bins. While in the second picture it may appear that the man in the black shirt is ducking to avoid hitting the left-center bin, this is trick your eyes are playing. Notice that still there are two people standing on step stools in the second picture. The ceiling doesn't look that low at all.

From looking at the Airbus drawings that StarlionBlue provided a link to, I must say, it doesn't look to be very hard to request an over-the-wing seat assignment.

In terms of the upper deck, the windows a re tilted inward toward the top. . .I'd rather sit on the lower deck. . .with windows that are more or less easier to look at terra firma through. . .unless you have a wingseat in the middle of the girth of the span. . .then your stuck with only wing and sky for the most part.

On an interesting note, according to Boeing's website, the A380 will be 25% more expensive for "trip costs" compared to a 747-400

and while only 30 airports can support the "extreme bulk and weight" (Boeing's words there), the 747-400 has support from over 200 airports

That may very well be the case. I actually didn't feel that the ceiling was low on the
pictures.

I've taken a few pictures from the Airbus A30 Airplane Characteristics for Airport Planning Manual

And added in some height marks, i copied the aisle width distance, rotated it and stacked them vertically, looking at things ( somewhat roughly ) it seems that the upper deck has about 2.5m from floor to ceiling, the lower deck has maybe 2.75m. See for yourself though....

Just because the trip cost of the 747 is a 100% more than the trip cost of a 757 doesn't mean the 747 is a bad airplane for cost-conscious airlines.
What matters is the cost per seat, provided you can fill all seats. And the A380 offers a better cost per seat than the 747, which makes it a good choice on high-traffic routes.

Trip cost in itself doesn't tell much if not associated with the number of seats.

I think that both bins and seats will be just as spacious as on a 340.

The perspective fools the eye a little. After all, ceiling height is 2.50m. This is quite enough. Also, the bins are probably not quite to scale. Note also that the bins in the upper deck can be smaller than on the lower deck since there are two less seats per row.

Given the article from the flugreview, Airbus stated that the BumbleBee 380 is "pushing" it in terms of weight for a widebody aircraft...hence, I think (JMHO) weight performance and cost/revenue per seat just might be worse than that of the B747 (which is one of the majour selling points of the BumbleBee 380 in the first place).....we'll see... JMHO again,

The proposed A380-900 would fit over 900 in a one-class config.

It's all a question of certification. The A380-800 will be certified from 555 at entry into service. You could fit more seats but this will require new certification.

So it looks like the window seats on the upper deck of the A380 will be very similar to those on the 747, with inward-sloping sidewalls and extra baggage compartments between the seat and the window. Personally, I am a big fan of those seats on the 747, since I love having a place to put my stuff that is easier to get at than the overhead bin but doesn't take up any legroom!
