United Airlines B737-500s Fleet

How many B737-500s does UA still fly? Are they all leased or owned? How many B735 is UA selling to AR and when will AR start taking delivery of the first one? Are they planning to return (in case they're leased) or sale all their B735s?

From what I have been told, We will get rid of all 737-500s within the next year to year and a half. Where they will go, I am not sure.

The 300s will be with us for a few more years at least. They will leave the fleet eventually as well. There is a reason they have not been repainting the 500s though.

I can see WN picking up some of the 735s and 733s as well, if their fleet crunch keeps on. UA owns some of the newest 737 classics, so it would be better than picking up very, very old US models

Why keep the -300s and dump the -500s? The -500 is a much more capable aircraft, the only non NG that can cross the USA. Considering how much more versatile the -500 is, I don't understand the preference for the -300. I bet the -300s are older too.

Anyone know the reasons for this?

Aerolineas Argentinas was supposed to take 8 B737-500 from UA, as part of a deal that also included 7 B737-500 from AF. By now, the 7 B737-500 from AF will enter the fleet (1 is already in EZE), but UA B737-500 lease was delayed.

CanJet is taking delivery of 8 735s, 4 of which are from a "US Source". UA, in all likelihood is that US source.

Thank you very much to everyone for your answers! However I received an email from a friend with a list including Active, Stored and planes due to AR.

According to his list UA has 32 active, 11 stored and 8 which were grounded about a month ago and due to AR for a total of 51 B735s.

So, that leave UA's fleet with a total of 43.

Does anybody know what will be the fate of the other 11 735s stand? I recently been told an airline in Mexico is getting 10 second hand B737-500s at the beginning of next year which definitely all come from a US source... could it be possible this 10 are ex UA planes?

UA is dumping the -500s as they become due for required checks as a result of the -500 being costly to operate on a per seat basis as compared to the -300.

The -500 requires the same staffing with nearly similar fuel burns as the -300 while generating 16 seats less worth of revenue.

Any range advantage the smaller -500 might have over the -300 does not matter in UA's case as the 737s are not generally scheduled for routes in excess of the 2-3hour range. A matter of fact the cost disadvantage of the -500 increase the longer the flight segments are.

In addition Gordon Bethune of Continental was recently quoted as stating he would love to get rid of the CO's 50+ B737-500 fleets as the aircraft were similarly expensive to operate.

Soon you'll also notice that Southwest is moving its -500 fleet to many of the inter Texas routes replacing the -200s. As the aircraft has a higher seat cost than the companies -300, keeping them on short routes within the Lone Star state makes financial sense. Previously much of the -500 flying was within the California corridor.

This is the exact same reason why Boeing has found it difficult to market the B737NG -600 model. If anything the -500 and -600 are more special purpose aircraft for specific market needs.

the last UA 737 was manufactured in 1992, hardly the newest of the classics. I guess it depends on how one puts an angle on things. I believe CSA took in the last classic.

Last week, I just saw a UA 733 in PEK which was quite a surprise, very far from home.
