Hey guys,

was poking around the Fairbanks Alaska FSDO website.

They have a neat service for pilots a set of pictures that have been taken of various airports in Alaska. These photos are for pilots to see the places they might be going into.

Anyway came up with this photo, and had to ask a question....

Where is the runway?

I know where they say it is, based on the markers.....but where is the runway?

OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

Before all the "experts" here start claiming how plainly obvious the runway location is, let me just say...good point...that's pretty damn funny. I can't imagine actually trying to identify that in flight.

Maybe the Fairbanks FSDO just assumes the locals will land wherever they damn well please.

I see where they FAA says the runway is....not sure I belive them.

Well obviously it isn't paved> If you look closely in the first picture you can see that the dirt is packed down where they have landed/taken off.

The second one looks pretty treacherous, they should just use the highway instead. This happens on the Dempster Highway in the northern Yukon Territory in Canada, you're driving along and all of a sudden there's a sign warning you about planes landing on the highway. It also happens in Chicken, Alaska.

Love the second picture, although I am somewhat concerned about a runway located next to a tavern. We have enough problems with drinking and driving. Oh well, that's Alaska for you Smile

On another note, the description of this runway cracks me up.

McGrath is a big airport.

They just rebuilt it two years ago, to help acommodate tanker aircraft.

In each case, once you know that there is a runway there, you can pick it out. But if I had not been told, then I would have missed them all.

I think that in Duffy's Tavern that the road looks like a better bet.

Personally, I would give them all a miss. Look at the overshoot at Reeve.

I think the answer for all those airfields is between the trees, snow banks, and/or rocks.

Yukimizake: Yes they do use parts of the Demster Highway for what they call "emergency landing strips" I think. From what I remember of our roadtip up there the summer before last, those strips seemed to have more potholes than the rest of the highway combined. The way we were bouncing around in our Explorer it's amazing people can land Cessnas there supposedly without loosing a gear...
