Here She Is: AR's 1st B737-500!

Although Aerolíneas Argentinas has been operating the Boeing 737 for over 34 years, this is the first photo posted on the net of a CFM-powered model. This 11-year-old -500 series, whose service entry was scheduled for November 11, is still parked at the Chivatos maintenance ramp at EZE, but it should enter service any day now. While heralding the dawn of a new era for AR, the arrival of LV-AYE also marks the beginning of the end for the venerable B737-200s, of which 30 are still in active service, although the fleet will start to wane over the next 5 years or so. Finally, after countless rumours, endless speculation, disappointed expectations and mysterious delays, the out with the "old" and in with the "new" process has begun, even if this aircraft is 3rd hand!

Hr001:

I'm afraid I cannot enlighten you with regards to its late service entry. In fact, when I saw LV-AYE on November 6, at Chivatos, it looked exactly the same as it does in the photo dated November 21, i.e. ready to fly. Hopefully, she will be flying in the coming days, but already it looks as though the next 737-500s will not arrive in time for the start of the summer season, which is a shame as with their greater capacity over the 737-200s, they could come in useful for the River Plate routes (MDQ, PDP), but oh well, if demand really soars, AU could always employ the occasional MD-83, as they've been doing to MDQ...

FLYSSC:

Glad that Argentina ranks as one of your favourite countries! It's a truly special place. Have you been?

LVZXV,
Thanks for the pic, the 737-500 looks good in AR's new colors. Nice to see them upgrading their fleet. Are all 732s to be replaced by 735s? Or will it be a combination of 735s and MD80s?

Cheers, Ralph

AU has added 2 MD-83s this year, and plans to add another 2:

The former is of 1984-build (the world's oldest MD-83) and the latter was the youngest Mad Dog in Spirit's fleet, dating from 1991.

It's nice to see more MDs coming, and AU plan to sell their 8 B737-200s so as standardise their fleet. AR, meanwhile, is looking to operate around 45 B737-300/500s come 2009, by which point the last of their -200s should have been retired, but I'm optimistic that there will still be at least a couple of -200s still flying to commemorate 40 years of B737-200 operations in Argentina, in March 2010. Either that or that one/some of the originals will head for preservation...

Hola ZXV,
todo bien?

"It's very telling how no Argentine carrier has ever paid tribute to River... "

That's cause we don't need to prove River's nationality while others do  Big grin. besides, its typical for people with low self esteem to want to show themselves so people can know who they are hehehe

By the way, how did the AR arrangement happen with bosta jrs to have its logo on some AR plnaes? Did Macri pay (if so, how much), or was a service exchange deal of some sort?

Hola EZEIZA:

Todo barbaro, gracias.

Football fanaticism aside, the AR-Boca deal was in anticipation (and later, celebration) of Boca's match against Inter Milan in Tokyo last December. Boca travelled a looong way and won, becoming "Pentacampeones" in the process.

I'm not sure where the funding came from, but I do know the contract entailed the painting of 2 aircraft (LV-ZSW & LV-OOZ), which sported the colours for about 6 or 7 months (ZSW was repainted, OOZ went to Air Plus).

Actually it was against AC Milan, not Inter  Smile

I thought there were more aircrafts with those ugly colours, but that means I unfortunately seen them both at EZE. I obviously did not take any picture of them  Big grin

----

I have just checked at Aerolineas.com.ar for flights to SCL, GIG and GRU. Since AYE should have started operations on November 18th, I was looking forward to see a "735" in the equipment column. However, I found it said "EQV" (equipment varies). So do we really know if that aircraft has started operations?

Finally, about this picture XV posted:

"with their greater capacity over the 737-200s"

Configuration of AR B737-500 is J8 Y100, which is just only 1 more seat than B737-200 J8 Y99 configuration. So, in fact it is not an aircraft to be considered for additional capacity.

And as of today, she has not started commercial services yet.

Good evening gentlemen,

Actually, the 735 will not have the Club Cóndor seats, as it will keep the Air France configuration. That's quite bad in my opinion, since it means a considerable downgrading of the Business Class service in domestic and regional flights.

The configuration of AF's B735 is 112 Y seats.
In Business class, the armrest of the middle seat are moved to enlarge the two other seats and part of the back of the seats comes down on the armrest to form a table, like it is show on this pic :

Actually, the seat pictured is the AF seats on the A318/19/20/21 & B735.
On the B735, the Business Class can be adapted from Row 3 (12 seats) to row 12 (46 seats)

Thanks for the correction, SSC. AU's B732s are actually noticeably more comfortable than their AR counterparts as they retained the AF seats, whereas AR installed seats identical to IB's (same pattern and everything).

Argentina:

However many seats the -500s wil have, the -300s will mark a significant increase in capacity, depending on how many how are acquired.

F-GJNI, the second -500 for AR, is heading south as we speak, in basic AR-colours but still wearing its French-reg. Is it true that none of the ex-UA -500s will join the fleet? If so, are AR looking elsewhere? And finally, has LV-AYE entered service yet, or is it still sunbathing at the Chivatos maintenace ramp?

Regarding the Boca livery: I am sure that it was a tit for tat association between AR and Boca. Boca is one of the worlds most recognized football clubs especially through out Asia where it is common to see fans wearing their shirts in the streets of BKK and SIN. What better marketing ploy than to have a well known 'brand' painted on the side of your aircraft! In return I am sure that AR offered Boca a nice little package to transfer the fans to and from Tokyo.
Back to the thread: So far Mata has delivered some of the promises he has made.744's, 735's, Zurich and so forth (not all but some). The one thing that I still have not heard much about since the announcement, was the start up of the mini hubs in COR and another two cities. Would the older 732's be retired, or will they be taken over to these hubs to start up the offshoot operations?
