I still can't believe they named the new wing after McGowan  Sad

As for that group that is against the expansion of ISP, for pete's sake you live on Long Island the whole place has tripled in size and pop in the last 10 years! Get a life!

Joe where are ya? You should love this news!

If the idiots at Newsday would ignore these folks every time they stamped their feet, they would go away. They should put a light rail to the Ronkonkoma train station and offer a true no transfer ride to Manhattan, since the cabs want your first born for any ride out of ISP!!

D950,

You are so right! I hate Newsday sometimes, as for the non-stop from ISP-PHX could be soon I hope. I know one guy who would be on that flight 3 times a year!

I still say B6 will come to ISP soon.

I'm gonna disagree with that...in my town, which is directly between ISP and JFK, the majority of people fly B6 from JFK. And I'm not just saying this b/c I'm the biggest JetBlue fan out there...everyone has flown them.

It would probably be more appropriate to say that WN wants to rule Suffolk County, but even then it's still a bit stretched.

I think WN will do fine with the expansion - that's one way to keep out competitors. Neeleman has actually publicly (and stupidly) announced that he wants to go into ISP. What I don't get is why he would announce it publicly...

A light rail line would have to follow a very complicated and costly route given the relative locations of the ISP terminal and the train station. And it certainly wouldn't make economic sense. For all WN's expansion, ISP is a relatively small airport in terms of passenger volume. The shuttle vans, which are considerably cheaper than taxis, easily can handle the airport passengers going to and from Ronkonkoma station - in this context, note that (1) by no means all ISP passengers are going to or from Manhattan (I'll bet that the large majority aren't), and (2) WN's flights are spread out during the day, so there's no "peaking" volume for which light rail might be more appropriate.

PROSA, it was wishful thinking, although I disagree about logistics, the Lincoln Ave. end of the field has plenty of right of way. Also if WN is looking @ 90 flights a day, they could easily market Manhattan, not everyone using WN is from the Island. As for the cattle cars they call shuttles, you can have them. Overall, the Island economy needs a shot in the arm, and NIMBY'S be dammed, ISP could become an excellent alternative to LGA, I just wish UAL would come back with IAD flights.

Jetbluefan1,

You are right, I should have said Suffolk. I would like to see B6 take on WN at ISP. I think they would win. As of now though WN has a strangle hold on ISP.

When the terminal was expanded for Southwest there was also talk of a maintenance facility for Southwest being built. Are they still going to build that? I drive past the airport quite often and haven't noticed any more construction there.

A maintenance hangar? I wonder where they would put that. I love the fact ISP is expanding now we need some commercial service at FRG!! Some MD80s to some local cities!

Most people I know in Nassau county always use JFK, or LGA. They couldn't tell you the difference between ISP, FRG, etc.

Tru, I work in the Garden City, RVC area and it makes sense to drive to JKF. For the person living in out east tho ISP is awesome! As long as you don't mind flying a bus.

FRG would be awesome! That airport is litterally 5 minutes from my house (I live in Massapequa - Farmingdale is the next town over and a bit north). I see the private jets going back and forth all day....the location is also excellent....right in the middle of the busiest street in the town!

But that's just wishful thinking.

Dam you go away for a few days and I miss all the big news. Eight gates is pretty sizable for Southwest. I guess we can see cities like PHX and LAX come online. As for a light rail system from Ronkonkoma it's going to have to happen now. You can't expect to move the volume of people Southwest will carry using buses. Well I'll be looking forward monitoring the progress of ISP's expansion.

Eight gates total? Damn! WN has more flights out of PVD than ISP, but they only have 4 gates in PVD (this is only because there is NO gate space in PVD). Good to see ISP growing, never been there but it seems like a nice little airport.

I have a question for all of you who follow WN very close. I know they are doing great at KBUF with flights to LAS, TPA, MCO, BWI and maybe I missing some but, any news on expansion to any other WNY cities? USAirways is losing gates A2,4 to Airtran at KROC (there moving from B6,9) so that will leave 2 gates open on the B side. Any thoughts or comments? Could they come to KROC? We have Airtran, Independence, and jetBlue here already, is there room for another LLC here? I would love to see those paint jobs in ROC though......

ISP is a cool little airport. I still love IFP as far as little airports go but ISP is growing and I think needs to grow more. The eastern end of LI needs it I think. I think WN fills that niche perfectly!

Just flew back into ISP from ORF via BWI!! It was AWESOME! The terminal is so nice. I took 35 pictures, but everytime I try to upload them to a trip report, it never works. I think its the host. Anyways, its such a nice airport now. I'm so excited that they are adding 4 more gates. Don't forget that this will probably lead to a parking garage because there is limited parking at ISP right now. If they expand to 80 flights a day, than there will be a need for parking space. I also like the idea of a Hangar.

It's so weird...everytime I go away, something always happens with ISP. I just went to VA, and when I come home - WN is adding 4 more gates. When I went to Europe in July/August - The new terminal at ISP opens. I have a feeling the next time I go away, I will find out that B6 is coming to ISP!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Joe

PS- FRG definately needs some commercial service. I heard that they used to have Northwest Airlink.
