Bmi To Wave Goodbye To Aircraft?

Anybody heard of this, I read that bmi (regional) will be leasing all or a large portion of their Embrear aircraft to Eastern Airways? Its no secret the airlines have some form of connection for a few years now, so what you reckon?

Any bmi/Eastern staff know anything, anybody got any feedback?

Connection???.... BMIR tried to bankrupt eastern by going head to head on thin domestic routes...

The embraers are not suitable for what BMIr are attempting... Thin regional spoke to spoke routes are profitably served with turboprops.


JetMagic and FlyBe found out the hard way... Aer Arrann and FlyBe are proving this fact on a daily basis with increased profits from the ATR and Q-400.

Connection, maybe I was a bit ignorrant with the knowledge factor there. bmi and Eastern had a bit of head to head with slots from MAN and EMA I believe? Then, last year bmi started routes offered by or similer to Eastern Airways. Plus there is a deal where Eastern pilots fly on bmi longhaul for pilot training in Washington. It makes me think the airlines are "friends" again, as I know at one point it was far from it.

Well the ice must have melted again since I finished working for Eastern Airways at the end of last year. At that time (Dec 2003), the friendship was most definately over, bmi were making an all-on assault on routes already served by T3, though some were at ridiculous frequencies, such as NWI-MAN once daily, compared to T3's three flights each weekday.

At that point, T3 were still using BD's MAN-IAD service to send pilots over for training on the J41 simulator in Washington, but I don't know if they ever got discounted fares for using this service.

Eastern Airways and bmi of course did have a bit of a love affair before all of this, as they code-shared on MAN-INV and MAN-DND. Neither route lasted long, but T3 have since re-launched the INV service on their own and it's now a success.

Believe me, from what I saw first-hand, Richard Lake (joint owner of T3) is a very, very, shrewd businessman and whilst I am sceptical about this story being true, IF it happens then you can bet they will have got the aircraft on fantastic rates and the routes will be ones which are firmly geared at the business market and can do well at Eastern Airways 'Premium' fares. This is exactly what happenned when T3 obtained BACX's entire J41 fleet a couple of years ago. They also obtained a number of existing J41 routes from BACX which were doing very well (for example NCL-BHX and LBA-SOU) and then put the remaining J41's to good use on other former BACX routes which had struggled to make money with larger DH3/ATP aircraft, such as BHX-IOM.

I said a while ago that it would be no surprise if BMIR looked at GLA-LCY, plus a few others from LCY when everyone was ridiculing them for announcing their re-entry to LCY on LCY-LBA. The ERJ-135/145 would be ideal for GLA services.

I'm surprised that BMIR have not been operated as a sepeate company similar to bmibaby.
You could either book on the flights through bmi and/or via a website for bmir. They have the right size fleet for regional flights but as some of you have said. They would be better having new turboprops in their fleet to be able to operate some routes better than with the ERJ's. It would make sense and they have leased an ATR for LBA to LCY!

Nice info there mate. The pilots of Eastern still use the bmi longhaul, I think a new agreement was done this year. If what I read was true too, I think staff of Eastern may even get a nice bmi friends & family rate too?

Maybe though, this is just a rumour? I think it would be good for both airlines though if it was not a rumour, and to be actual fact because, bmi could release some outgoings and Eastern could extend the great product and offer (maybe) new services.

Like everything, time will tell?

Work4bmi..... Eastern still do have the special rate, and it is nicely discounted. But they do not have a staff rate on any other route with bmi. Unless they have their own staff travel department who book their flights for them.

I cant speak for the overall revenue for BMIR flights but their loads are pretty good, maybe this shift at leasing an ATR is to test the water as so to speak.....
