When Do We Get An A346 From VS?

Is VS everplanning on sending the A346 consistantly down to LAX?? Wouldnt it be a good and profitable product as you have all of the upperclass suites and all the people in LA willing to pay for it. Don't get me wrong I love AA but I would rather fly in the Virgin Upper Class Suite.!.

I thought there was one scheduled in daily. VS has two LAX - LHR daily, first one a B744 departing LAX at 1745, flight VS008 and the second a A346 departing at 2105, flight VS 024. I watch it pull into Terminal 2 each evening while I am boarding our evening departure to YVR. Flight VS023 arrives into LAX from LHR at 1850.

The VS023/24 is and always has been scheduled on an A343. There have been one or two occasions where it has been operated by an A346 or B744 due to an aircraft change etc. The remaining A343 will be fitted with the suite next year and although the A346 could be a good aircraft at certain times of the year there are other routes which require the extra cargo and passenger capacity more than LAX, i.e JNB, SYD, PVG. Until we see these routes operating with A346's the VS023/24 will take a back seat.

LAX can't handle a 346, it has to close the two adjacent stands. I know because I went out there a couple of months ago to turn one round.

Hey

China Eastern sends a daily A346! and if they will be able to handle the A380 in the future they can handle an A346.
Maybe when then new VS A346s arrive..

All I can is when I was there, that was the situation. Perhaps China Eastern don't have a dedicated stand.

China Eastern would have a harder time than the VS plane taxing and getting into the gate because it is right in between to termianls, T4 and TBIT. VS is at the end of T2 so they would have an easier time taxing it.

Hey

I have seen China Easters A346 parked at the end of the Bradly terminal, usually where the ANA 777 parks. It doesnt stay in the gate, it goes out to where they park those QFs. But as said VS would have an easier time parking theres, since there gate is at the end of the terminal. I was very surprised when NZ pulled in there LOTHR 744 into the inside of the gate instead of the outside.

Don't forget that VS operate from the NW terminal at LAX - essentially designed as a domestic terminal. Being at the end of a pier doesn't make things easier if the terminal was already overstretched trying to accomodate A343/B744 - Aircraft which routinely have to be towed (as a pose to taxiing on under their own power)onto stand as it is due to space restrictions. An A346 is just that little bit to big to be accomodated economically by a terminal designed to handle aircraft from another era.

SevenHeavy dont mean to argue with you but everynight the 744 and 343 have no trouble at all. They just "drive" into their gate. It wouldnt be difficult at all. I watch them both pull into their gate day in and day out. Also the China Easter went to the TBIT on the side of AA right behing the 777 which was heading out to NRT. Not only that but there were 4 747s going towards the end of the TBIT. I thinik it is possible.

AAplatnumflyer:

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it cant be done because I know that the A346 has operated to LAX a couple of times in the past. However out of the 20 or so times I have flown to LAX with VS about 8 of them we have shut down the engines on the taxiway and been towed onto the gate because the clearance was so tight. The stands on the east side as well as the ones on the end of the pier can handle up to a B744 but not with one on every gate. A VS B744 captain I know says it is always tight maneuvering onto the stands at LAX and if there is any doubt they just shut down and wait for a tow. If you observe the clearances between wingtips there is often very little air between them. Aside from this the main problem with the A346 is length which does not compare to an A343 or B744. If the aircraft parked right at the end of the pier it would infringe onto the active taxiway. It can only park at one of two(I think!) stands that are at an approximate 45' angle to the direction of the pier and even then will infringe onto the adjacent stands meaning larger aircraft can not be accomodated.
