What caused this?
There's no faults running through the HKG area that I know of.

The Airport Authority stated the crack is due to normal usage. They also quoted a crack was found in 2001. Latest news from them is to inspect the runway at every half an hour until mid-night, then a permanent repair will carry out.

Let's hope this is a one off which is not too serious. I'm sure the Airport authorities are more than capable of doing a good repair.

It would have been nice to have been spotting/photographing today though, with all movements on one runway!

More action diverted to the southern runway, the better!! Much more accessible for spotting/photographing than the north runway, especially during 07 operations that are prevalent this time of the year.

I suppose runways on reclaimed land are more prone to differntial settlement, causing cracks to appear. I'm sure this was taken into account when designing and constructing the airport, but consolidation is always tricky.

I scratch my head, therefore I am.
