The other night while I was at KSJC I noticed a Ex-United Airlines DC-10(reg N326FE)operating under FedEx...The paint has pretty much been untoched, except the United logos are gone...Does anyone know how many of these Ex-Unted planes are still floating around for FedEx...It was a pretty cool site none the less...

Didn't FEDEX also convert some of the UA DC-10's to MD-10's? I saw in our database that picture for the Netherlands AF their 'new' former UA-DC-10.

Yes, 763..

The first DC10s that FedEx acquired from United in the ,say, mid and late 90s were converted to freighters and put into service (before the MD10 program kicked off). These birds (as well as a few ex AA -10s) are slowly but surely being updated with the MD10 equipment. The jets that are stored usually get their freighter and MD10 conversions before they are put into service, atleast from what I've been seeing. All of the DC10s are (or were) supposed to be converted to MD10s..

Caution wake turbulence, you are following a heavy jet.

I cringe every time I see those two aircraft. They always seem to break down in STL. That means they send another aircraft through and I get to stay late at work.  Sad

There were several of these DC-10s parked at STL for a long time, being converted to freighters for Fed Ex. United colors, no logos. Does anybody know if STL is where these things are converted into MD-10s?

Thrust, from what I understand UA still owns 323FE and 326FE and that is why they have never repainted. The reason they were in STL all the time was because they were getting close to an inspection and they were trying to prolong the use of the aircraft, or avoid doing it before returning them to UA. We went months without seeing those pigs and then 326 showed up this week.

STL gets a lot of the garbage airplanes here. It's only a 50 minute flight to MEM and IND so they aren't too worried if an aircraft breaks. IF they do, they just divert one to pick up or send a reserve aircraft over. We'll go for a week or two at a time seeing the same aircraft from FX, ABX and others that are close to inspections. By doing this, they extend the amount of time the aircraft is used before going down for a lengthy time.

Fedex isn't converting every DC-10 that they acquire. Many are being scrapped for parts at GYR (where they do many of the conversions). Last I heard about 25 were slated for or had already been B/U.

Some of these aircraft must be close to being time expired, is there any information available on this.

Bennett123: Please clarify what you mean by "time expired".

One of the United cargo DC-10s that was NOT taken by FedEx had only 800 hours left until D-check. Nobody right after 9/11 wanted to sink that kind of money into the airframe, however with the cargo market as it is now, it may be more attractive.

Those particular two DC10-30's are not slated to be converted to MD10's. I don't think they'll ever get around to painting them in FedEx colors. They are leased from United and I heard that we extended the leases since we need the capacity right now. I hated to work on those airplanes, when I was a second officer on the DC10, because there always seemed to be something wrong with them.

As for time on the airframes, I think most of the DC10's/MD10's are just a little over halfway through their 120,000 hour airframe times. I don't think FedEx would sink the amount of money that they do into these aircraft unless they planned on keeping them around for awhile.
