I read that Emirates will use the 340-500 to Zurich. Also when I look at the timetable for next year there are indicated flights with this ultra-long haul. WHY such a aircraft for such a "short" distance?
Regards

They are short a few planes and will probably change when they get more 773's. As far as I know the A345s are for JFK then SFO then LAX.

Perhaps they need to use this airplane as it is the most luxurious in EK's fleet in order to compete with LX.

Correct, EK is now using a mix of A345 and A343 to ZRH. First A345-flight was yesterday, as far as I know.

The A345 is flying to ZRH instead of sitting idle on the Tarmac in DXB between two long-haul flights. SQ does the same with their A345s, they're also used on intra-asian routes to maximise aircraft utilisation.

I will be flying to DXB in Febuary I was thinking of Emirates. Would I be on A A340-500??

Also maybe EK is putting the A345 to ZRH becuase they will introduce the A380 soon which will fly to JFK?? and AKL?

from what i can gather from OAG schedules:

A345 DXB-MEL-CHC dep DXB 1010 returns at 0540 - quick turnaround
A345 DXB-SYD-AKL dep DXB 1015 returns at 0535 - quick turnaround

A345 DXB-JFK dep DXB 0805 returns at 2105 - overnight

EK is using a mix of A343 and A345 on ZRH and KIX, with DXBZRH on Thu/Sun and DXBKIX on Wed/Fri/Sun.

They could schedule the A345 all days to KIX, so it is puzzling why they would send it to ZRH.

In fact, DXBZRH is served with A345 (Thu/Sun), A343 (Wed/Fri/Sat) and A332 (Mon/Tue).

Why such a hodge-podge of service?

I would have thought maybe they could send it to MUC to compete with LH who are operating this sector with their new business class beds. Just my opinion.

The A340-500s are for JFK and Australia services at this time.

The ZRH turn is in between longer hauls, and to get the new first class to the high yield market.

I know what routes the A345's are intended for but i just thought that MUC would be more of a competitive market for this aircraft type. Flight EK049 to MUC have identical flight times to ZRH so there is no problem about the aircraft not being back in base for the ULR trips intended. Its just that LH are operating this route with their new business class cabin and isnt the Bavarian region the most affluent in Germany? And dont Germans have the highest disposable income of any nation in the EU? (which i know Switzerland is not counted).

As i said though, its just my opinion.

Effective Jan 2005, all EK flights will be operated with A345. I don't know why or for how long. It doesn't really make sense to operate a ultra long haul on this trip, but I'm not the expert.
