Avianca Colombia was founded as SCADTA "Sociedad Colombo Alemana de Transportes" on December 5, 1919 in the city of Barranquilla. It has operated continuously for the last 85 years, making it the oldest airline still operating in the America's and the second oldest in the world after KLM which was founded on October of 1919.

It started its operation with slow flying Junkers F-13 hydroplanes, transporting both passengers and mail on the Magdalena River between Barranquilla located on the Atlantic coast; and Girardot in the center of the country.

Making the trip by ferry boat took normally between 8 to 10 days, with the Junkers F-13; time was reduced to 10 hours.

The SCADTA name was changed to Avianca, acronym for Aerovias Nacionales de Colombia; in 1939

Hello AV757

Thanks for the news!

I hope the time is better now for AV to celebrate this anniversary and that it will get another 85 years!

Hope to see a new livery on their latest B763 like they did on their B757 and MD-83 with the 80th anniversary

Congratulations AVIANCA! May you become the first airline in the America's to reach 100 years of continued operations.

I was thinking the other day that Avianca must come close to EL AL or MEA in terms of what the airline has had to go through in the history of its existence just to carry normal operations thru the really bad period that its country went through in the 80s and early 90s. For that matter, Avianca deserves my respect, because through thick and thin, Avianca's proud wings are still flying the flag of its country till this day and for the foreseable future.

AVIANCA. La Primera Linea Aerea de Las Americas.

CONTRATULATIONS AVIANCA....

You are one of my favourite Latin American Airlines
and the other is Mexicana which is right behind you in
third place.

I am proud as a Latin American that we have two great
airlines that were flying before most of the word even knew
what an airplane looked like.

Many more years.
