I beleive that the MD90s were origionally mainly at SLC...then a few years ago they shifted things around, even giving ATL a couple...so SLC is the best option..but I can't say it wouldn't have done well on shuttle...high capacity, less noise in the front, and that "Shuttle Show" on the screens!

I know CVG is getting some...I was pleasantly surprised to see one on DCA-CVG for March, as I might be flying DCA-CVG-GSO in March, and MD-90 flights are always very nice (only have one, and I loved it).

I am sure most -90's will be based at SLC, although it is true that all the hubs will see service. They are certainly helpful into noise sensitive airports like SAN, etc.
As far as crew, I once asked a 90 Capt the same thing. He said that 90 crews are rated on the 88's, but 88 crews are not rated on the 90. He said the difference in pilot training is about 2 weeks longer for the 90.

"In case it is needed"???? The ex-QQ MD90s I flew had 30,000# thrust engines (I believe DL's are the same). No "extra thrust", but a lot more than competitive airliners in its weight class. And 738 pilots wonder why I say I got spoiled by the MD90.

Both MD88 and MD90 use the FAA DC9 type rating. DL, by contract, has different pilot "bid positions" for the different types with the MD88 being the "standard" and the MD90 pilots receiving "differences" training after completing the MD88 course. That would explain the statement that 90 crews are "rated" on the 88, but 88 crews are not "rated" on the 90. However, a two week differences course helps explain DL's financial problems. Even AA only used 4 days (2-ground school, 2-simulators) for MD90 differences training for MD80 crews.

I rode a DL MD-90 SLC-PDX on 11/9/04. The plane was completely full. It blasted off like a rocket. I remember riding DL'S 727-200's out of SLC in the summer and wondering if we would clear the surrounding peaks. I love the 90's and hope they stay around for a long while.

I see their 90's pass over my house almost every day coming in to SLC. And I've flown on a couple of them, they were good to fly on. 2x3 seating, flip down monitors on the ceiling, quiet in front. On one flight from SLC to SAN we got up to 41,000 feet. (On that flight I was sitting in the back though, right next to the right engine and the aft exit cone. Kinda noisy but not too bad). I'll take a 90 any time.

All M90 crews were DFW based, but usually always deadheaded or flew and picked up the 90 later in SLC or elsewhere..that's where they're primarily based.
As for training, it depends on which base you're in. The CVG/NYC/ATL guys don't fly the 90, so they don't have to have the differences training. The SLC/DFW guys do, which allows them to fly both at the same time. The differences training isn't really that much, just some extra pages in the flight manual in each section (like 1-2 pages or so). The cockpit layout is almost identical as well, save for the fuel levers/ART thrust panel, and a couple of other odds and ends. Nice plane overall, wish we had more.

Depends upon what you mean by "beat." Marketwise B737 certainly has the edge. Maintenance support and reliability-wise... the same. Performance-wise? I'm not so sure. The MD90 engines produce ~3k lbs more thrust each (30k vs 27k) on a significantly lighter airframe. On a typical inter-CA flight from SNA to SFO/SJC the MD90 would "jump" into the air with a full 142 pax load while the 738 has to work to get climbing with the same 142 pax load. The ~1 hour flight takes about 3-4 minutes less in the MD90 using 70-80 lbs more fuel than a comparable 738. Sorry I can't compare longer flights, but LAX-COS-LAX is the longest AA ever allowed me to fly the MD90 [dispatchers were surprised I called to ask if they were sure they wanted to do that] and I've never flown that flight in a 738. N/S in Calif. I have a lot of experience in both planes (MD80 doesn't count) and I'd choose the MD90 any day --provided I wasn't paying the maintenance expenses (significant when you only have 5 birds to spread the costs over).
