I am doing a little research on Windhoek's International Airport, just east of the city.

Things I am trying to find out:

- What long-haul routes did WDH once have? (I know that SAA used it extensively with their 747s, also Lufthansa used the 744 and later the 343 on this route, I saw UTA Airlines with their DC10 there, also Aeroflot wanted to start service on a regular basis with their IL86. I saw their aircraft around 1992 in WDH). Any more details?

- What is know about the crash of a SAA Boeing 707 in the sixties?

- What are the regular airlines nowadays and what aircraft are they using?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Setjet
At the moment the only operators are
AIR NAMIBIA MD11/732-200/Casas
SAA 737-200/800
SOUTH AFRICAN EXPRESS CRJ
BRITISH AIRWAYS/COMAIR Boeing 737-200
LTU A332
TAAG-737-200

The SAA 707 344C accident was on April 20 1968 ZS-EUW
SA 228 JOHANNESBURG/WINDHOEK/LUANDA/LAS PALMAS/FRANKFURT/LONDON

123 fatalities-5 pax survived
On take off the aircraft climbed to 650 feet and then levelled out.It then
started to descend and flew into the ground 30 seconds later 5327m from the
runway.
PROBABLE CAUSE-Retraction of flaps and reduction of engine power from take
off power to climb power caused the aircraft to descend. The crew mwmbers
failed to notice the aircraft was descending.Take off was in darkness with
no possible external reference/inappropiate alteration of stabilizer trim/
spatial disorientation/preoccupation with after take off checks
So most possibly pilot error

Hope this helps
Tony

Thanks Tony for all the information.
