TAROM is the flag carrier for Romania. In the past it flew mostly Russian jets with the notable exception of 2 707 ordered during the Ceausescu/Nixon era.
After the fall of communism they ordered two A310-200 and leased another one that crashed. These were used mostly on the US/Canada/China/India routes. For medium haul they ordered 737-300. For short haul they got ATR 42-500.
A couple of years back they ordered a small number of 737-700 and mothballed the A310 fleet (the two remaining pair). The 707s moved to the executive fleet for the president and prime minister's use.
A couple of months back I was looking over Airbus' orders and noticed that they have a couple of A318s on order.
I am very curious to find out if anyone has any info about this transaction. With new 737-700s and the 737-300 in top shape what in the world would posses them to order A318s. Anything nefarious going down here?

Actually Tarom has on order four A318 with deliveries scheduled for 2006/2007. For more info check out my Profile/Homepage.
Currently Tarom is in the process of selling its two A310-325 ET aircraft but will continue to service New York - JFK and Washington - IAD via Vienna trough a recently codeshare agreement signed with Austrian Airline. Flights originating in Bucharest, Timisoara and Cluj are operated by Tarom into Vienna where change of aircraft onto Austrian's A330-200 is required.
