What Future For VS/MH Codeshare?

Hi All

Does anyone know what will become of this arrangement now VS fly to SYD themselves? I think it was a ten year agreement that started in 1996 so will it carry on until 10 years is up? That will cause confusion when booking online for example. A person wanting to travel VS may inadvertantly find themselves on MH instead.

That's true. I think the flights will be somewhat downplayed if booking online on VS's website.

VS however still generates enough revenue between KUL and LHR to justify the codeshare till the deal ends. Any termination of the deal now means that VS will have to pay MH a fine of sorts.

The code-share is due to come to an end in 2005 (as it started in 1995) I think. The Malaysian government and the UK govt are due to have talks about the ASA soon. Malaysia Airlines is pushing for a third daily service into Heathrow and a daily service into Manchester.

British Airways has expressed an interest in returning to Kuala Lumpur in 2005 as part of the new agreement.

Other carriers may be involved in the talks as Garuda Indonesia are looking to expand their current code-share with Malaysia Airlines into the UK which have so far been very successful. The Garuda-MAS 'airbridge' between Indonesia and Kuala Lumpur has seen traffic mushroom at KUL over the last year and KLM is also keen to expand on this cooperation at KUL.

We may also see Malaysia Airlines switching their UK partner to KLMuk with passengers feeding via AMS instead of LHR (and currently transfering on to bmi)... next year holds some interesting changes at Malaysia Airlines in Europe as the airline continues to expand in Europe after years of downgrading services to the West.

When SQ and VS teamed up, it was agreed that VS will not renew the codeshare with MH when it expires.

It should also be noted that (I think) six of MH's current frequencies into LHR are operated using VS' route authority. Technically, without a codeshare with VS, MH cannot continue operating those six frequencies. I'm not sure if they have resolved this issue with the UK CAA. But, as MAS777 notes, they are having talks soon.

I think MAS may have got around this with Garuda code-sharing on those flights now although Garuda used to operate into Gatwick. MAS was also offered additional rights after British Airways withdrew from Kuala Lumpur - citing increased demand as their reason to be given additional flights into London. The UK CAA agreed that demand between London and Kuala Lumpur was indeed growing and has done so year on year and agreed to the additional traffic rights.

MAS is going to try and trump the UK CAA as it is well aware that BA is keen to return to Malaysian soil and will bargain for additional rights should BA be allowed back on the route.
