Hey Chicago friends,
What is the latest on Meigs? I know it is closed permantly, but has there been any penalties imposed on D*CKhead Dailey. I know AOPA was pushing for legal action but I don't know how sucessful that was. May Bleep Bleep Dailey's bizjet be delayed for an eternity at ORD.

There was a post on this the other day saying that Chicago used finds for airport improvements to do the demolition. And that the city may have to pay back the money as well as additional totaling a possible 8.4 million I think. Someone correct me if I am completely wrong though.

If the idiots running Chicago had half an ounce of brains, they would have expanded Meigs and built it up as the 3rd airport, instead of closing it to make a stupid park.

Oh yeah... all that commercial air traffic on the beautiful lakefront with skyscrapers a quarter mile away... now THERE'S a brilliant idea
For gods sake people... GET OVER IT. It's gone. It aint coming back... it was cool but not a practical use of lakefront real estate. Call Daley all the names you want but it's not going to get you anywhere.

Meigs was a PERFECT use of the land it was on. There are hundreds of business, many major international multi-million dollar industries, either based in Chicago or having a major presence in the city. The location of Meigs made it very convenient for business jets, which was it's main use. Daley closed the airport because one of the landing paths flew next to his lakefront condo, and his wife complained about the noise (no, I'm not making this up). So, simply put, Mrs. Daley's arrogance led Mr. Daley to use federal funds meant to improve ORD (and therefore the air traffic flow of the world) to destroy a Chicago landmark loved by many. As Pilotaydin said, Microsoft chose Meigs as the default airport in flight simulator, leading it to become the most widely recognized "small" airport in the world.
Dayflyer:
While I know this is a touchy subject, as someone who probably knows enough about aviation to make sense out of this situation, the third airport idea just won't work. It is a two hour drive from the northwest suburbs to Peotone, on a Saturday. This lack of a major market (with MDW and ORD drawing many pax away from EON) would probably lead most airlines to show little interest in serving it. Airlines currently have trouble serving both ORD and MDW, so the probability of them moving ops down to EON is unlikely, if even existent. Furthermore, ORD is the best option for the majority of the population of Chicago and its suburbs. It is also the cause of many nationwide and worldwide flow problems. If ORD stops working, the entire air traffic system falls to chaos. ORD needs to be expanded sooner or later, IT IS INEVITABLE.

Listen, I know all of you hate Richard Daley because of what he did to Meigs...but think about those of us who live in Chicagoland and have to deal with his shenanigans on an ongoing basis. The Meigs thing is bad, but he's done far, far worse. In fact, so bad that many of his comrades are currently going to Federal PMITA prison.

Just because a piece of lakefront property is near the Loop doesn't make an airport the best use for the land. As you can see from the pictures, you have a beautiful harbor for sailboats right next to it... museums, parkland, etc. The airport was accessible only to a very few... now the site will be accessible for all to enjoy.

By that logic, we should demolish LAX and build something else there because the world busiest O&D airport happens to be on prime, beachfront property. The size, location and shape of the Meigs peninsula is perfect for a smaller, GA reliever airport. The location of the control tower also served to aid in vectoring planes in the area to ORD and MDW. The Friends of Meigs have an excelent idea for a park and an airport, but Daley wont budge because of his condo location

Not really...if/when Daley gets his casino put there, which is a strong possibility to happen in the future with the city's financial problems, it will be avaliable to those wishing to gamble. Not for all to enjoy.

Had he even bought the Condo near Millenium Park when he closed Meigs? IIRC, no

He's got more than one condo. This is what I've heard from several people, obviously I can't back it up as Daley wouldn't come out and say it...of course, his terrorism excuse sure gives the condo reasoning a lot of indirect support.

It may seem like a strong possibility, but the State has no intention of letting him have it. Chiefly, Blago doesn't want the casino, and neither does Lisa Madigan. Also, he should have thought it before he built the $400 million kidney bean.

It's not rumor or conjecture. The local ABC radio (WLS890) affiliate made a point of mentioning the fact that the noise bothered his wife in their new place. I think it was in the Trib and CST as well.

Meigs is closed permanently. Don't even bother wishing for it to reopen.
"hizzoner, jr" put up all of those excuses so he could have the land returned to the City Parks district and then turn it over to General Land usage so he could get a casino built on the site. Daley will find some way to wiggle out from under any penalties or fines that may be imposed by the Fed. All this is just another way to screw GenAv and the public, and show that the man in the mayors office is the Man of Power (not to mention, the man of corruption). It would be nice if they could really scald that man some way. But, I'm not going to hold my breath, waiting for that to happen. Goodby dear Meigs, you will be missed!

Closing an airport in part because his wife didn't like the noise. Could Approach control vector some NW DC-9s over their condo? Maybe a red eye or two? Preferably early morning. Pretty Please?
Well the sad willful distruction of Meigs is an eye opener for all of us who enjoy aviation. I am sure many other airports like Meigs are under the gun, looking to be plowed over by greedy land developers. I have heard Hawthorne and Santa Monica have been constant pressure from developers and noise nazis.

Clevelands Burke Lakefront airport is under alot of pressure also. There have been studies and such done, and talks of putting a park, golf course, or gasp, even more housing development. Still not as beautiful as Meigs, but still a nice airport.

Nosedive,
From what I recall, the planes were allowed to depart from the taxiway. I heard that if the owners didn't want to do it, Bleep Bleep Dailey told them he would pay someone else to do it. Apparently they were only allowed to take off in one direction though and if there had been an unfavorable wind, they would have been screwed. Can someone clear that up?

What the Daleys have done to Chicago is a shame, Meigs being the most recent example. Having done a good amount of research on criminal activity, they're the best father-son team around. Never liked either of them as politicians or people for that matter.
