Al-Jazeera Airways will finally start operations in Fedruary with 2 A320s with seating capacities of 165 pax. It will initially operate 30 weekly flights from Kuwait City to Dubai, Manama, Cairo, Oman and Beirut.

The airline intends to acquire 2 new A320 in 6 to 8 month's time but it is not clear if these will be additions or replacements for the other 2 planes.

Al-Jazeera is the 2nd LCC in the Middle East after Air Arabia. Another LCC based in Beirut, MenaJet is still to start scheduled flights and utilizes its single A320 on seasonal charter routes.

It's probably been asked a million times, but I've never read the answer - and now that the name appears on an airline, I'm now interested as well: what does Al-Jazeera mean? Is there a translation for it, or is it simply the name of a person or place?

Am I right to assume that they have nothing to do with the television station?  Big grin

Frank

It is not related to the TV network which is based in Qatar.

BA, I'm looking forward to take photos of the A320s, hope that it will be operated during the day, unlike Star.  Smile

Best regards.

Sounds good OD720.  Smile

As AirxLiban said, Al Jazeera officially means "the island" but it also means "the peninsula" depending on how it is used in context. This is the case for the TV station which is based in Qatar which is a peninsula.

And no, it is not related to the TV network in any way.

The airline initially suggested launching operations with 70-seat Avro RJs but they are now in talks to lease larger Airbus A320s to serve routes from Kuwait to Beirut, Cairo and Dubai. [Airliner World, Deecember 2004]

It'll be interesting to see if the authorities allow them to fly to CAI. What about longer flights to Europe? STN? ORY?

Hello There .........

I'm new to this Forum ,so I hope someone will welcome me here .......

About Al-Jazeera it just received their certificate to operate an airliner yesterday ....... and it was on newspapers ..........

A think it will make a big competition to the old airline here in the country Kuwait Airways , and I think it will be a strong one as it will be a low cost airline ...........

And off the topic ....... I have that there's a lot of people who know nothing or little about how things goes here .... so if anybody have any questions to be asked about it , I'll be glad to answer .........

Welcome to the forum FlyingInTheSky. Good to see new members from KWI. Has Al-Jazira (I think they spell their name with an 'i' rather than a 'ee') already set up shop somewhere? I have been trying to gather some details of the airline but without luck. Would you be able to tell me more, like who the promoters of the new carrier are? if they have a website and any other details. Also heard that the Al Ghannem people too have received clearance from KWI Government for a new airline which is apparently going to be full service not low cost.

Once again welcome...

Izzayak FlyingInTheSky, Kif Il-hal?

All literature I've read about the airline have stated that CAI (along with BEY and DXB) will be the first destinations for this new airline, but I wanted to know if they've actuallly recieved the neccessary rights to operate to the Egyptian capital?

The Kuwait-Cairo market is very big and extremely profitable and high yielding for both MS and KU (the latter added an extra flight afew weeks ago), so I'm skeptical whether the authorities (especially the Egyptians) will easily grant rights to another carrier on this lucrative route. In the past BA and LH have applied to serve the CAI-KWI market from their respective hubs unsuccessfully.

Your feedback would be appreciated

Horus

Welcome aboard

I have a question off this topic.
Do you know when the "old" airline (as you said) , namely Kuwait Aw will announce their fleet renewal , especially in the long haul sector.Would be glad to learn (hope everybody in this topic too........) what you saw in the newspaper and what you learn.
Many thanks in advance.

FCKC...

Do you know when the "old" airline (as you said) , namely Kuwait Aw will announce their fleet renewal , especially in the long haul sector

If I can answer that to the best of what I know...

KU is currently looking at realigning their network and schedules. This may see the A310s with reconfigured seating, couple of destinations knocked off etc. As far as fleet renewal is concerned, almost all experts agree that they actually have too many airplanes for the way they run their business currently. The new airplanes are only needed to if the airline chooses to change its perspective of the airline business and decides to aggressively pursue a definite goal rather than trying to be a mish-mash of everything - a course which is leading it nowhere... and fast!

KU needs to identify if its going to be an LCC or a full service carrier OR even both, but then as distinct entities. Any other line of thought is doomed to fail.

So IMHO any fleet plans will not be before end of next year. They are already short of one A300 (having pranged it in Saudi Arabia) and will be an A340 short in the summer schedule (major maintenance) so it will be a tough call managing its schedules.

Af002, AW magazine has for the last 3 months published 4 reports/articles about the airlines history, operations and plans which included an interview with the airline's CEO. In it he explained all that Vimanav stated above. If you can get your hands on a copy of the magazines it'll make an interesting read.

Well Thanks everybody for this welcoming ( wa shokran lakom )

Well ..... Vimanav sorry I don't know much except from an interview that has been done with Al-Jazira's chairman Mr. Boodai ....... And according to the interview they will start operation in February with 2 leased A320......

The interview

Horus I don't see any reason why the Egyptian authority should decline the airline request .The airline based at Kuwait unlike BA & LH at it meets all safety and other requirements .

FCKC I don't when will the management of KU decides to change the current fleet ...... We do have unorganized and tired fleets ....... I'm really looking forward to it .......... And I don't agree that the fleets we have now is more than we need ,I would say unorganized YES .... We had to cancel sometimes flights because we've been short of aircrafts and even crew , that's doesn't mean the situation is OK with company , it still needs new plans specially with the lunching of the new airline ..............

AF022 I agree with Horus that for the mean time it's better to look for the news in the magazines ,but , sooner or later the airline should have it own website ..........

Again thanks to you all for this the welcoming .........

Best Regards ,,,
