Never had chance to fly with a MD-11, but probably I will fly to Thailand from China with Thai Airways' MD-11. Any comments on that a/c? I ever took their B744 & B743. I think MD-11 is a little bit old, right?

Hi Smeagol.

A couple of years ago I flew with Thai M11 between Bangkok and Sydney. The cabin of the aircraft was quite boring, I sat in the last row in economy. The seats are old, the IFE is old fashioned.

Next year Thai is starting to retire their M11 aircraft. I guess that the aircraft are about 13-14 years old.

Apart from the rather boring cabin, the M11 is still a lovely and good-looking bird.

Hi Smeagol,

well, what can I say. I flew it once in Business Class ZRH-BKK in April 04. It was one of the worst flights I ever had.
See my trip report at: http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/43038/6/

The seats were old and worn, no head or footrests, poor IFE, etc....
However, I've heard from friends who flew TG's MD11 in Economy and were really happy about it.
Personally wouldn't fly it in business anymore unless forced to  Smile

Cheers,
Pilatusguy

PS: Let us know about your trip anyway!

TG's MD11's were manufactured in 1991 and 1992.
I flew with them in economy a few years ago.

Agree. IFE non-existant, and interior boring.
having said that, inflight services was A class, and 34inch seat pitch in economy was more than welcome. these two things are more important to me that IFE.

Y class config is 2-5-2.

hope that helps.

OMG, such an old bird?! Anyway, thank you all for the info.

Meanwhile, a few words:

1. 2-5-2 config sounds like a Air China T7, I love it! Wink/being sarcastic
2. What's IFE? Individual Facility of Entertainment? You guys are using too many mysterious abbreviations here and I am kind of lost:-( Any newbie guideline somewhere? Laugh out loud
3. My experience with TG B744/743 was pretty good. (Jun 04, PEK<->BKK) My worries focus on the a/c. Does it fly smoothly and quietly? And, of course, safe.

p.s.: I am considering the alternative to take Air China's 767...

NO!!!! go with TG. the MD11 is a fine aircraft.

These babies are smooth as... smooth as silk!
seat pitch is a big advantge.

IFE = In-Flight Entertainment.... lack of seat back video and audio choices on TG, like many other airlines, INCLUDING CA.

3 engines on the MD, 2 on CA B767.

If you plan to fly regularly, join their FF program. VERY generous benefits.

A twelve year old aircraft is nothing to worry about. There are LOTS of aircraft older than this flying around at any given moment, and they are all perfectly safe. Heck, NW has DC-9s that are old enough to be those MD-11's grandpa.  Smile

Flwon on TG MD11 twice and they are fine. Loads of legroom, great thai service and relatively quiet.
Just make sure you get an aisle seat, cause you don;t want to be stuck in the middle.
