Mexicana Postponed The Acquisition Of 57 Planes!

Mexicana was considering placing an order for 57 Airbus aircraft. Aircraft were due to delivery in 2007, but merger between MX and AM have postponed the plans and MX will only receive 7 more A318s.

Also Airbus approached AeroMexico and made an offer for 2 widebody planes for two new routes to Japan and China which are being considered to launch in 2007. But AM is obviously going Boeing and for the T7 (next year we will know more of this) but I can tell you that AM will fly the T7 in the first Q of 2006.

Does anybody here knows what planes Mexicana was pretending to order?

Well MX were retiring their fleet of B752s soon. The replacement for the B752s could have been A321s, to go with their A320 family fleet. Maybe the F100 was going to be retired also. A318 would be the perfect replacement.

57? That's almost their entire fleet! Maybe newer A320s with CFM engines, to standardize with their newer A319s and A318s? Add in a handful of A330s or A340s for longhaul flights.

The last paragraph is interesting. If I'm reading it correctly it says that there will be 5 new airlines commencing operations in Mexico. Has anyone heard of this Before? It seems like a lot to me. Can the country handle that many start ups all at once?

I don't know if the Mexico can handle it or not, but I know there are lost of destiations not serviced by AM or MX that could be exploited.. so I would have to say that all 5 could probably do a good job depending on where they go... Since the bilateral agreement is still in place.. we already know some cities can be erased off the list of destiantions served...

Guess the Mexicana Airbus fleet will replace the 757's and eventually the 737NG's will replace the Airbusses....

Mexicana has always been more aggressive than Aeromexico. If a Mexican airline starts flying to London, Frankfurt, or Barcelona, or maybe Asia, It will not be AM. It will be MX, you can bank on it!

I most certainly agree with you but should they merge, then the plans of Mexicana to fly to ASIA will still go as
planned execpt that now it will be under a new Flag Carrier.

Should the merger not take place, Mexicana will continue
with their plans.

777ER...I can assure you that MX will never replace the 757 with A321. The MEX density alt. is to high. You'll take some aweful weight restrictions out of MEX on warm days. I would make a strong assumption that A320 will be the largest narrowbody airbus you see there.

I am skeptical about the fact MX was getting 57 planes. If i'm not wrong it would have been the largest single order in MX's history. Plus, with 5 airlines coming on line, of which I know at least 2 are real, what is MX going to do with so much growth?

The focus for MX right now are international routes. They already have nice cashcows in some domestic routes and are quite happy to let the ones with low margins go to the LCC's.

Plus, 2006 is an electoral year in Mexico and any big expense by the current government would be viewed as "suspicious" and used by the opposition to gain votes.

My question is, then, why would they issue such a strange statement. Maybe it was market signaling.

Believe it or not there's a strong rumor around that MX will get 4 second hand A321s in the Second Q of 2005!

Yes you were reading correct! Well nothing new!

Start up names are: Polar Air which will be flying under Nova Air (and currently has 2 B737-200s almost ready), AeroTropical (so far with a sole B732), Republic Air (just brought their sole B732 but they pretend to bring more... ), Aerolíneas MesoAmericanas (rumors around they pretend to fly Embraer 135s based at TLC and PBC) and finally A Volar Aerolíneas based at TLC but unknown equipments. And apparently all this airline WILL INDEED start!

And YES! I do think the country is able to handle all this new start ups and more! Remember the good days with TAESA back to the early 90s when they have new planes direct from Boeing's factory and simultaneously they flew 74 aircrafts in the years of 93-94 while MX and AM had something similar to 100 planes. Finally after 10 years we are recovering from the December of 94 crisis and we are seeing a better and brighter future in our aviation!

The A321 for MX can be the A321-200, you don´t need to operated from MEX, you can use it on other routes, like CUN-LAX, ORD-MEX, on high density, and pull it out of MEX on "empty" flights, without restrictions

About 57 aircraft, it could be possible, why not ?, MX once have the largest fleet of 727 out of the US (it was the second largest fleet in the world)

That would be stupid. With the altitude and heat of MEX, the A321 would have to take restrictions on all but some of the shortest flights, as the A321-200 already can barely make PHL-LAX. The 757 really is tailor made for MEX.

The F100 is a much lighter, more efficient plane than the A318, and with the starting of Rekkof (the F70 and F100 share a platform) the flow of spares should be much better

Might sound very stupid to see A321s replacing 57s on MX fleet due to MEX airport being classified as 'hot and high' but latest rumors point out that MX is seriously considering the introduction of 4 A321 in 2005. AND BTW, if that happens MX will be the second operator of the HOLE A320 family in the world after AF!

Latest Airbus predictions. A-321 could be used in routes as far as MEX-LAX, MEX- MIA, MEX-GUA or MEX-SJO
If we see with more detail We can detect that 95% of the MX 757 legs could be flown by the A-321( MEX-CUN, MEX-LAX, MEX-TIJ,and no restriction from any sea level airport)
Then I see, in case, a quite good operation.
