Does anybody know about this? I have heard of other ppl getting free upgrades (no miles deducted) on numerous other carriers. I guess my status on JL really doesn't do much (Sapphire) but is there any way of getting an upgrade? I am flying 1/9 NRT-YVR. If I go late, will anything change?

Seeing how flights there are still seats available for JL17 on 1/9 I don't see high probability for an overbooking situation which might warrant upgrading Y pax to C of which might go to elite status or higher fare paying pax first.
Other than that, don't see any likelihood. Don't be cheap: you pay for what you get so if it's C you wanna travel in, fork out the $$.

Airbus lover, I didn't even have to read your response.
My question is, why do certain other carriers just do it. Or is it just sheerly out of luck. Yes, the thing is, I paid full-fare on economy as that was the way of prioritizing my flight. So I paid 3x or 4x more than the discount fare.

nless there's going to be an overbooking situation, I'd go back to Coach, keep the saved money, rather than wager on getting into J... Of course, you don't know if it's going to be overbooked.
Or you can wink at the agent, give them 5, twist their hand around 3 times jump up and down scream CASH ! CASH! FLY, and then do 50 Jumping Jacks.. and they'll upgrade you ....
