Old Or Young Fleet? Here's Fleet Age Charts!
User currently offlineUdo From , joined Dec 1969, posts, RR:
Posted (9 years 9 months 2 weeks 17 hours ago) and read 21461 times:

For years I have calculated and updated the airline’s average fleet age in my database and want to present a small extract. It’s quite interesting seeing the differences.

Just some remarks:

- since I can only take years into consideration, there may be some slight variations; however, all figures affected in the same way
- decimals behind comma rounded
- fleet status as of end of October 2004
- mainline fleets only
- pax aircraft only

And yes, I know some fleets are larger than others and so on and so on. And no, old fleets don’t mean they are unsafe.  Wink/being sarcastic

Udo:
Awesome list!  Big thumbs up

Personally I prefer the older jetliners. If I had the choice between a DC-9 or A320, I'd take the DC-9.

My trip to Hawaii, I chose the UA 747-200 over the Aloha 737-700.
My trip to Cuba, I chose the CU IL-62 over the MX B757.

I am curious as to what the Nationwide consist of. What country in Africa is Nationwide based out of?

Hello everybody and thanks for your comments!

Malcolm,

I once started with the major airlines only and continuously added all the others. Every few weeks I update my database and whenever aircraft are added or leave the fleets, I calculate the changes.

Larry,

I also try to fly older jets whenever possible.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
Nationwide Airlines (CE/NTW) is based in Lanseria, South Africa, and operates one B767-300ER, two B727-200 (A), one B727-100 and ten B737-200 (A).

PlaneSmart,

I only count active aircraft operated by a carrier, no matter if owned or leased. As soon as planes get stored, I remove them from the active fleet and “store” them as well in another file. In any case, average fleet age has to be updated.

Udo

Now I realize I've flown on airlines with one of the oldest fleets: TAME (22,6), LAB (23,6) and VASP (27,0), but on the other hand Transavia (2,8) with one of the youngest.

But nothing beats flying a Dak Big grin

Superfly - Nationwide are a South African carrier, they operate domstic sectors and some short-haul internationals from Livingstone (Zambia) etc.

Check the photo database to confim, but I seem to remember they fly older versions of the 737.

Tan flyr,

In order to get the figures, no matter if just one fleet type or total fleet, I sum up the age of every single plane involved. As I mentioned above, I can only consider years, not months. So a 2000 model counts as four years old and so on. Sure, there are variations, but all airlines are affected in the same way.

Hallo Udo,
it must be boring in the Oberpfalz these days...
As you are doing this great thing that - I am sure - we all enjoy...is it possible to get a list of our Venezuelan airlines. We already have Aeropostal in your first post. But do you have Santa Barbara, Aserca, Avior, Rutaca, LAI and Laser (easy, just one plane) ?

Hi Chiguire,

it’s not as boring the Oberpfalz as it looks in these days!  Wink/being sarcastic I did most of the research some time ago. Permanent updates are no problem, all my work today was posting.
Of course, here come the Venezuelan airlines:

Avior: 14,5
Santa Barbara: 17,7
Rutaca: 26,0
Aserca: 36,4

Laser is a problem: I still have four planes listed – have they grounded three of them? Which is the one left? The average of the four is 36,8 years!

Please note: planes below 12,7 tonnes excluded (Beech 1900, Cessna Caravan and others). Another problem is fleet size: the smaller the fleet the less representative average figures are.

Adios
Udo

That can't be right, it's much lower than that. PSA's oldest plane was delivered on October 28, 2003.

PSA no longer flies the Dornier 328 turboprop, since September 7, 2004.

Allegheny: 11,3
Piedmont: 12,7

Allegheny was merged into Piedmont on July 1, 2004.

I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.
