So does anyone know why this particular A320 has the extra wheels??

It was my understanding that this was a special request by the airline for operating in less then perfect airports that are abundant on the sub-continent.

Indian Air ordered with wheels to land on less developed strips throughout the indian subcontinent.

Uh..... I hope Dtwclipper and Alitalia744 are joking because it looks to me like the second set of wheels is from another a/c in the background. In between the two sets of wheels you will see a blue engine nacelle of another a/c.

The above are correct. It was a question asked in Airliner World not long back and the reply was the airline ordered the extra set so the aircraft could be used for poor runways at smaller airports.

Nope, it's real enough - Indian Airlines was the only customer for this option. The problem was that some of the airfields that Indian Airlines flies/flew into couldn't support the weight of the A320 with a single bogey main gear. So in order for them to be able to fly the A320 there, they requested from Airbus a 2-bogey main gear.

HAHAHA No no no! The first Airbus has 2 rear wheels and the second has 1 rear wheel. That's what they are talking about.  Laugh out loud

Dtwclipper and Alitalia744 are completley correct. I'm sure another airline requested this aswell, can't think who at the moment though. As for B4real, that A330 in the background (possibly AIH / MYT on its way to the Maldives / Far East Asia?) is definetley a completely separate aircraft to the A320.

We are talking about the A320 in the foreground, not the A/C behind it.

Uh...take a look at the actual gear. The Aer Lingus A320 has one set of wheels on its MLG and the Indian Air A320 has 2.

That's why we're here.

Do a search .........Its an old worn out Topic.

IA had specifically ordered the A320s with Bogie type gear because they had to operate from underdeveloped Runways in the country.Bogie gear helped distribute the weight over a larger area.
However recent acquisatons are the conventional Two wheeled gear.

Has another airline requested this 2-bogie main gear in another kind of aircraft? a 737, a 727?

Cheers,

They fly them practically everywhere. Indian Airlines has many A320s configured with a double bogie. I flew the double bogie Bombay-Delhi and back, both of which are the country's most developed airports.

The pretty much use them as any other A320 in their fleet.

cheers

I remember reading a long while ago that McDonnell Douglas would have the MD-95 assemble in China, and the aircraft would also have four wheels on the main landing gear for the same reason as with this A320.

The same reason probably goes for the Tupolev Tu-154, meant as a copycat of the 727 but far better adapted to operations from rough airfields.

30 to be precise. 31 were ordered and one was lost in 1990. All these aircraft are registered VT-EP.. or VT-ES..

IC A320s seen with any other regn have two wheel bogies.

...and just to add that the double bogie option will not be offered any more, the new IA A320's when delivered (even when ordered first?!) will come with a single bogie.....
