Ever wondered about the age of freighter fleets? Brand new metal or noisy smokers?  Wink/being sarcastic Here's the answer.
In addition to my listings on average age of passenger fleets, I want to present some charts on freighter fleets.

Hello everyone,

thanks a lot for your comments!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Just wanted to add that my lists don't include operators with Russion-only equipment. I will work on that!

OK maybe I'm incredibly dense, but what are the numbers? I don't see the legend mentioned anywhere. Oldest,Newest perhaps?

Phil,

the numbers are years - average age of fleet. I should have included the legend again. I put the link to check the rules/legend on my other thread.

Very interesting list

It´s becoming clear the KLM Cargo´s won´t be in for much maintenance soon  Sad luckely we also do Atlas, TNT and Air Atlanta  Smile

Seems bigger freight carriers have a prefference for oldies.

What does this mean for the 772 LRF´s ?

Hi Udo, I noticed that in Europe Islandsflug's avarage cargo fleet age is 11.6 years.

Isn't it so that Islandsflug has one single cargo plane?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Timeflys Smile It seems like yesterday that the UPS fleet was in the mid to high 20 range now UPS has the second youngest cargofleet in the US. I guess the 75,76,MD11 and A300 aquisitions starting in 1988 thru this very moment have reduced the fleet age tremendously.

Great Work Udo

Hi again and thanks for your comments!

Henpol747,

MAS Air only operates one B767-300ERF, leased from LAN. It’s a 2001 model.
Aerounion has two A300B freighters, one a 1977 model, the other one a 1979 model.

Preben,

Islandsflug operates four A300-600RF (though they often fly for various airlines on short/medium term lease contracts). One of their A310-300F is on lease to Turkish Airlines, the other one may go to another airline soon (don’t know exactly yet). Additionally, one B737-300QC operates as freighter most of the time.

UPS Pilot,

The UPS fleet’s age has gone down a lot, mostly due to many brand new A300 (average 2,2) being introduced and many B727-100s going out. Their B757 fleet already has an average of 11 years, B767s are at seven, MD-11s at ten years. B747 classics, DC-8 and remaining B721 keep the fleet age up.

Udo

Apart from Expenses point of view.An Aircraft that is Mantained well,is as good as a New one.
Any Aircraft out of a Major check is as good as new.
The Difficulty comes with Cost of spares & the frequency of checks/spares replacements prepared by regulation authorities.

MEL,

your're absolutely right. I brought this point up in the other thread on average fleet age. The charts are not intended to comment negatively on the age of some fleets in general.

Btw, not only spares and more frequent checks increase operating costs of older fleets, but also fuel consumption of older engines and noise issues.

Udo

Udo,

You forgot one of the main expenses to your reply to MEL. UPS is focusing from a predominatly 3 man crew to a 2 man crew fleet. 727 to a 757, DC-8 to A300 or 767, and 747 to MD11. The DC8's are slowly being parked as the 721's.l
