I have noticed that when I am parked at the Gate the IFE system is running fine but when the A/C leaves the gate the entire program restarts why is this? This is so annoying. I had thought the a/c runs a music server with playlist just like running software such as Itunes with MP3 files. Why can't the IFE start from the point it stopped at. Even my car's CD player can start the CD if I turn the car off and then start it it will start again from the point where I turned off my car.

Also the PTVs take a long time to restart. On my last El Al flight it took 30 minutes for the program to restart. Why can't it do it right away like a DVD player? Especially if it's computerized my computer can restart the program in 2 seconds? I think waiting 30 minutes is not good because it bores the people? We need to install AVOD where this won't happen.

Also on EL Al why is it that I could not watch airshow on the PTV and listen to music at the same time? When I tried to push AUD the screen shut off? I know on United you can press VID select the channell then selet AUD and listen to music?

Also do airlines use MP3 files and playlists? How do I setup a system at home where each channell is a different playlist? What software do the airlines use? If it's tapes or CD's how does the system work? I always am amazed at how the system works I asked to see it and I still could not figure out how it works.

I would love to see an a/c all automated where when the flight attendant selects"departure"from the screen all the boarding doors will close automatically and arm and all the overhead storage bins will close automatically. Think about it this can be done all by touching one button on a minivan we have an electric sliding door so why can't an a/c be automated. After the button is pressed the screens could automatically appear and the safety video would start. Then at the end it would show airshow and then depoly for takeoff. If some of the process is automated the flight attendants could be attending to other needs such as making food etc.

The announcements could be recorded too so the language barrier would not be a problem. I was on America West and they played an automated announcement to have the passengers get ready for departure. This is a great feature for emergency situations too.

I still think the crew have to activate the IFE program to start.

Would there not also be restrictions like not running the IFE program until 20 minutes after take off and prior to landing (at least like QF does).

We dont actually "make food"! And also we would not even prepare a service prior to take off, for the siple reason that the galley ahs to be 100% secure. There is not enough space to get everything set up and then restow the carts! The only slightly "food" related things we do prior to take off is stock the ovens.

The automated door closure and overhead lockers is a good idea in theory.

But doors have to be crosschecked by your opposite colleague to ensure slides are not blown, and part of the reason for shutting lockers manually is it gives us an opportunity to check whats actually in them, do a cabin secure, checking lugagge not on pax's feet, if so putting into the lockers, making sure seatbelts on, nothing obstructing exits etc.

I would assume that for your first paragraph, the power transfer (from APU to generator 1 or 2) can cause the system to reinitialize. That happens a lot, especially with "commercial" systems, such as IFE.

The reinitialization process will do what it says, ie reinitialize and reset everything.

Audio reproducer (tapes, CDs, EEPROMs) therefore can not restart where they stopped, since they go back to zero.

With regards to the PTV, I would think that this was due to a problem, because if it was working prior to departure, it should have been smooth and carry on, apart from thea pause during the safety video/announcement broadcasts.

Shame for the Airshow, but that all depends on the system, and on the customisation the Arilne is asking for, you can either complain to the airline or to the IFE vendor in that case.

For channel selection, it's fairly easy for CD, tapes, EEPROMS, you just put customised media (CD with only rock for example) and distribute the channels over the seats. IFE softwares are quite amazing and quite complex.

With the server systems, they indeed use MP3, and they simply put them in "genre" folders, and distribute the channels once again. Being digitalized, you can pause and restart whenever you want.

That's already like this, at least for some operators.

Automatic and pre-recorded announcements must be like 15 years old or more, so I can't believe an airline wouldn't have them, although they are not compulsory. I believe QTR has at least 6 or 7 different languages on their fleet.

I do not know that Airlines required to shut down the IFE prior to take-off and departure, apart for maybe a very short time-frame (electrical loads issue).

I dealt with a QFA story where they complained about the fact that when the landing gear was down & locked, the audio medias would stop (IFE software deviation), so this implies that they indeed want the IFE to operate until the very last minute.
