Using Your Record Locator On United's Website.

I recently bought tickets on orbitz on two UA flights. It gives the record locator on orbitz's website, but I can't find anywhere that I can enter it in on UA 's site so I can directly change seats on the UA website. Anyone know where I can do this?

You can't really do much of anything on United's website with a reservation that wasn't purchased on their own website, let alone change seats. You can, however, call the airline directly and they'll do it for you.

I'd rather be flying.

If your Mileage Plus number is associated with your record, you can view it under "View All United Itineraries".

You will not be able to modify it in any way. Orbitz has to do that, or you can call the United reservations line.

UA reservations will not and should not alter any PNR that wasn't created by UA unless it's only seat assignments. Any change before departure, you need to contact your travel agent, in this case Orbitz.

In my opinion CO has the best Website, concerning doing seat assignments, Special meals etc....even When they are booked through a travel agent.
I think that UA should follow this!

AMS has a point - for CO, whenever you make a reservation and you put your OnePass number in it, it will automatically show up in your continental.com account, even if you didn't make the reservation on CO's website. When I made a reservation on Orbitz for my mom to go to Florida, it automatically came up on their website, with full functionality to change the seats online and view the reservation - props to CO, as it is one area where their IT department works well.

When I, through Orbitz, booked on United/NW earlier this year, I was able to view my PNR and change seats

- On Orbitz's website
- On United's Website (for UA flights only)
- On on (IIRC) Worldspan's PNR Viewer.

I remember having to call UA Res because one of my NW flights kept disappearing from the United PNR viewer (It was like UA100-NW1574-NW2773 but the return was showing up as just NW1505-UA125, missing the hop from PLN to DTW (NW2766)) and I was a little concerned. My seat assignments also were changing themselves for a few days (I'd book, say, 46A, come back a few hours later and it would say "not assigned", put myself back in 46A, check in a few hours and it was OK, but the next day it had changed to 36B....even though 46A was open very wierd).

The Trick is...Orbitz lives in Worldspan (along with NW), and UA lives in Apollo. Your Orbitz PNR number is a for a Worldspan PNR; you need to find the UA (Apollo) PNR number, which will be different and use that. I forget how I found it on my flight...I don't recall it being easy, but I did find it, and it opened up a whole world of possibilities

For example, on that trip, my Apollo PNR was PF975C and Worldspan knew me as OL2NUH

Hope this helps,

Lincoln

Sorry you decided to use Orbitz, or any travel site. You'll be lucky to still have your seats when you check in. Good luck!

Certainly sounds like it -- if that's what your using and it still won't work for you, I don't know what to say except maybe UA "fixed" their website.

You can try using the Apollo PNR viewer (sorry, the URL escapes me at the moment -- perhaps Viewtrip.com or virtuallythere.com? (I know Sabre's is mytripandmore.com).

They're handy, but I still have yet to find either a Travelocity rep or an airline res agent who will insert the PE (Pax Email) field in one of my PNRs for me (necessary to view Sabre PNRs through MyTripAndMore)

JetRanger -

From what I've read, MyTripAndMore only works if there's a PE (passenger Email) field associated with the PNR in question...for "privacy" reasons. (From what I've read, it doesn't VERIFY the email address it just wants to see one on the record).

I have had no, zip, nada, none luck getting anyone with Delta, Alaska, AA, or Travelocity to add a PE field to any of my Sabre PNRs. Delta gave me the telephone equivalent of a blank stare, followed by something about changing anything but my seats would cost $X (they were REALLY hard to understand through the accent and echo); Travelocity told me that they already had my email address "somewhere else" so there was no need to add it again and they wouldn't; Alaska just told me it couldn't be done.

[The idea, I believe, is that the travel agency you booked with would make sure that there was a PE field on the itin so you could check things online if they wanted you to be able to take advantage of that "feature"... Or at least that's the only thing that makes sense to me.]

Jfkaua -

That's downright odd. The only ideas I have are -

- Make sure that you're entering your PNR exactly as given. Sometimes 0 looks like O and l or I looks like 1 (or vice-versa)

- If you have anything wired in your last name (esp. Hyphens, possibly accented letters) make sure you enter it _as ticketed_. For example, my last name is King-Cliby; none of the CRS systems support a - in the name so I'm always ticketed as KINGCLIBY/LINCOLN* -- Most sites, including the PNR viewers, can't find me unless I omit the hyphen (I must
say that Alaska's website has been able to take just about anything I threw at it).

Lincoln

* - (Unless someone ignores "Kilo India November Golf Charlie Lima India Bravo Yankee"... then I can end up with just about anything after KING, including IVY and IBY, not to mention Liebye  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Gigneil:

I thought I was pretty clear. He'll be lucky if he still has pre-reserved seats when he checks in if the flight is full or over sold. People that buy tickets on travel websites are the ones that get involuntarily DB'd when the flight is full or oversold. Plain and simple. Seen it dozens of times myself in person. That is why I never, ever book through travel websites for any reason. I just won't take the risk of being told at the airport "You don't have a pre-assigned seat, so you'll have to wait and see if we can find something for you."

S12PPL, we will give you preassigned seats. You can pick them yourself, or we will just pick them based on your preferences. If, however, there is a schedule change (which the airlines do frequently), you will be given any open seats, and it is your responsibility to go into your account and change the seats to what you wanted. This will all be explained in an email sent to you from Orbitz.

As far as never using an agency, you might miss out on deals. Sometimes flights are cheaper using one airline one way, and another the other way. This is a chance you can't get using an airlines own booking engine.

I could change them for you, but I'm not sure if I have the authority to do so... Don't know what I'm allowed to do, and what I am supposed to send off to the pax or UA. Send me an email, and I'll look it up on Monday.

Lincoln,

just one small correction: http://www.mytripandmore.com is for Worldspan bookings, the website for Sabre is http://www.virtuallythere.com... Galileo is http://www.viewtrip.com and Amadeus is http://www.checkmytrip.com.

Out of all these sites, only Sabre requires the eMail-Address-field (Sabre's PE-field), all other sites are content with just the filekey and last name of the passenger.

Regards,
Frank
