I am trying to find out how many freight carriers are still using DC-8s. Not finding much info on the web either. I know that UPS, Airborne and others still use them. I was mainly curious who was still using the -50 or -60 series aircraft. Any input would be appreciated.

UPS, Airborne, DHL, and Bax Global still use the DC-8, although most in use by these companies are the -63, -71, -73, with an occasional -62 in the mix. To my knowledge, there are either very few or no 50 Series still active, and there may still be a few of the -61's flying. Most of the these aircraft were operated by Connie Kalitta, and Fine AIr, until a short time before 09/11.

There are a few airlines in Africa that operate the 50 series. Also I think there is one in Brazil. The only 61 that I know for sure that is still operating is with ABSA. MAS had one recently and Airborne may still have one or two.
Arrow Air ,ATI and Murray Air operate the 62 in the US. MK has several 62s and there are a few more in Africa. As Far as the 63 goes Airborne still operates a few, Arrow has 3 or 4 and Murray Air has 2. Skymaster has 2 in Brazil, Mk has 2 and there are are 1 or 2 more in Africa. I would guess the total number of 50, 61, 62 and 63 series DC-8s still in operation is around 30 at the most.

Arrow Air is still flying. I see them fly over my house on approach to MIA whenever they land planes flying west on runways 27/28 and 30. Also, Tampa Columbia cargo airlines flies DC8s into MIA (though they are replacing them with 767s).

Murray Air, based at Willow Run, operates two DC-8's. They are N865F and N921R. Both are all white and there are numerous pics of them in the database.

Whatever happened to Transcontinental which used to be based at YIP? They had some ex Kalitta DC-8-50s, I remember them having the red and gold cheatline but having the black tail like Transcontinental. They used to be parked over by the north hangars at YIP years back.

Too bad Conrad doesn't buy some of his old DC-8s back like he did with his 747s, I used to love seeing those DC-8s in the Kalitta colors.

Didn't ATI and BAX merge? and didnt they get rid of all 60 series DC-8s and now just flying 70 series?

I wonder if N867bx is still around. God I hated those JT3's. My guess is that there are a hell of a lot more than 30 of the 50-60 series still in use.

MIA seems to be DC 8 central. BTW, how about Fine Air they were/are? Use a DC-8 fleet.

And here at BWI, ATI flies some former JAL 8's. These rare birds are combis! Two thirds of the front hauls the cargo. Aft third is set up in three and three configuration totaling 32 to 36 seats complete with operational aft galley and several lavs in that semi circular DC-8 unique setup. I believe they fly military charters across the pond from BWI to points in Europe. One of the captains told me that within a few year they are going to ditch the 8's for 767's. The passenger cabin does not look too shabby at all. However, I remember those early DC-8's with the Palomar seats and window curtains; hybrid prop/jet jet-o-rama.

BAX Global purchased ATI a few years ago. They use to account for the majority of the flights in the early morning push from TOL...but I think CCI owns that now. The TOL hub has the main flow of planes of around 25-30 aircraft between 1am and 6am. When I counted a couple day ago...ATI is used for around 11-14 of the flights, 4 are now done by Express.net, and the rest by CCI 727s. They also have an afternoon bank of around 5 to 10 flights...most of those are teh DC-8s by ATI - Saturday as the extra flight with the Polar 744F that ops down to Sydney.

I haven't seen any of the 62 series aircraft for awhile...but I don't get out to TOL as much as I use to. Always a 71 sitting there though.

N867BX

My fleet charts are a bit out of date but I just can't see where there are more than maybe 40 active 50 and 60 series DC-8s out there. If you think there's more than that can you provide some kind of an idea who flys how many?

Bax Global had 4 DC8-63's. N867BX, N868BX, N869BX and N870BX. All 4 were retired to the desert after 09/11, but I recently saw a pic on the net of N867BX with a foreign registration. That was always my favorite, because it was the only one in the fleet built as a freighter.

ATI also had N799AL, a -62, on lease for awhile, but I dont know if it is still in the fleet or not. All the the rest of the ATI -62's are combi's and have CX as the end of the reg number.

The Murray Air DC-8s are -63s, not -62s.

ATI has flights that serve HIK via HNL's runways. The most commonly seen one is a -62. Haven't seen an ATI -63 or -71 in ages.

I'm pretty sure that they are out of business. They still have two DC-8's parked at YIP. Both are in very bad shape, and have no engines. They are white with the black and yellow stripe.

Transcontinental is now known as Express.Net. The black and yellow DC-8s at YIP are ex Transcontinental. They were last operated by Zantop and I think still have Zantop titles.

DHL has 9 70 series aircraft. One is painted as Astar Cargo. At least one of the ex airborne 63s has been painted in DHL colors. I don't think that Airborne is operating more than a handfull of DC-8s. Most of them are sitting at ILN with pieces missing.

The numbers for UPS and ABX are not correct. UPS does have 49 DC-8s. However all are not in use as there are several in storage. Same with ABX. At one time they did operate 18 DC-8s but as I said earlier most are WFU at ILN.
