Austrian Airlines has asked civil aviation authorities in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain to allow direct flights from Vienna, the company has said.
"We are seeing an increase in tourists, as well as business travellers, from the Gulf to Vienna. By next summer, we expect to get rights to fly to Abu Dhabi and Bahrain" said Dennis Irwin, a sales executive with Austrian Airlines, Dubai office.
"We carried about 40,000 passengers so far this year, compared to 30,000 passengers last year" he said.
In 2003 alone there were around 70,000 tourist arrivals from the Arab world in Austria.
That is a 35 per cent increase over 2003, said Erika Nowak, Marketing and Media Manager in the Vienna Tourism Office.

lets wait and see ... to my mind OS is expanding too rapidly for the moment ... and they are running extremely short on aircraft when they want to fly all the routes they plan ... on the other hand - they have to make a strong push forward and expand in order to stay competitive ... hope they have a net below them while doing this balancing on the rope high up in the air ...

By188b: With all this expansion, will OS order new aircraft? And given that they have an unusual mix of 330/340/772 will they standardise the fleet?
Macc: thats the result of taking over lauda air. i am sure they will standardise the fleet whenever its convenient.
In addition they have VO's fleet integrated, so that OS Group is operating now with A330/A340/B772/B763 for the longhaul, A319/20/21/B736/B738 for medium range and F70/F100/DH8/CRJ for the shorter hops (I do not take the few remaining MD8x's into consideration as they are almost phased out).
AUH and BAH could probably be done with B738 like they do with DXB. Not the most comfortable solution for a 5 hours flight.
But in their fleet plan they still show 2 addnl B772 (OE-LPD/LPE what I recall) in their database without a defined delivery date/year. For the shortrange fleet OS recently announced the purchase of 6 additional F100's bringing the F100 fleet to a total of 15 then. So this might free a few B738/A32x for the medium range and their expansion into the Near East (TLV might be 10times a week by next year, IST 2x/day, ...).

If BAH and AUH flights are expected to survive on their own i.e. terminator flights...then OS will fly B 738s from VIE nonstop to AUH/BAH like it does for DXB.
However if they want to fly VIE-AUH-BAH-VIE then we might see the B 772 and B 763 utlized for this route.
