The order was already made public by LH on 8 December...

... but it's nice to see it now also confirmed by Airbus.

Cool, that means Airbus can add 20 x A346s to their production schedule (VS + LH), nice way to end a year for any manufacturer, I would guess.

Can't wait to fly the A346, she looks very impressive.

Hmmm, so LH is comfortable with the 346's? Have read in this forum, that most of the airlines aren't.
So maybe LH has another demand in 346?

NumberTwelve, don't believe everything you read about airlines and how happy/unhappy they are with the A340-600 (or any other version, for that matter) here on airliners.net...

... because at least one airline that's constantly being mentioned here as being unhappy with them is in fact quite happy with them (from an operational/economical point of view)... and, yes, I have that from someone who'd know (and, no, it's neither a pilot, nor flight attendant, nor a check-in- or booking-agent, or sales rep).

Whenever the subject is Airbus or one of their planes, with the A330-200 being the notable exception, quite a lot of people simply keep repeating old lines, regardless whether they were true in the first place, or whether the situation has since changed...

It's a bit like we're seeing in the B7e7 discussions now: some simply cannot get beyond the fact that the material that this plane will be made of is different from the plastic that was used to make their lunch containers or the dashboard of their car...

Regards,
Frank

Does anyone know if those 7 A346 aircraft will have a 2- or 3-class layout?

Now that LH has opened the new First Class Terminal at FRA, I would be surprised if they cut back F-Class on additional routes (especially on those to the far east).

As all of LH's 340-600s are in 2-class-configuration, it would surprise me a lot, if the new ones will be in 3-class-configuration.
LH has equipment for markets with First Class demand (B747-400/A330-300/some A340-300) and for those with less F Class demand (A340-600/some A340-300). If you ask me, it's a very smart concept.

So does this mean LH is replacing their 744s with A346s?

I don't think LH will phase out their 747-400's until LH has enough A380-800's to do so. After all, their FRA to JFK/LAX/SFO flights demand the use of the 744 for now.

DeltaWings,

again, LH uses the 346s (and some 343s) to markets with no big demand for First Class whereas the 747s (as well the 333s) are used to markets with First class demand. LH's newest 747-400 is two or three years old. A bit early to be replaced...
