Lufthansa Hires Pilots, Flight Attendants as Airline Expands
Dec. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Europe's third- largest airline, is hiring 20 pilots a month and will add 500 flight attendants next year as the carrier boosts capacity to meet demand for air travel.

``All of our long-distance flights are full to the last seat,'' Stefan Lauer, the carrier's personnel chief, said at a press conference today to celebrate Frankfurt Airport serving its 50 millionth passenger this year.

The airline expects to raise seating capacity by between 5 percent and 7 percent next year and sees long-haul traffic growth exceeding that level, Lauer said.

Lufthansa Chief Executive Wolfgang Mayrhuber said Dec. 13 that cost-cutting agreements reached this month with pilots and ground-handling employees had brought the Cologne, Germany-based airline ``100 percent on track'' toward a goal of saving 1.2 billion euros ($1.6 billion) by 2006, including 300 million euros in cuts from a yearly 4.6 billion euros in labor expenses.

Lauer also said the airline expects to reach a pay agreement with flights attendants in the first quarter of 2005. The airline has been talking with unions about cost cuts for more than a year.
