Hi All,

Anyone know whats going on in Memphis? FedEx is having ***HUGE*** Delays.

I know they got hit by a pretty rough storm last night... But still, that was last night... All the FedEx flights bound for MEM made it in basically on time, so arriving wasnt an issue. Their IND hub appears to be running on schedule, maybe with a 1-2 hour delay per FedEx aircraft departure.

It appears all passenger operations are on-time with no problems... but its FedEx with the huge delays.

For instance:

No MEM-DTW MD-11 flight ( scheduled Daily )
1x MEM-LAX A300 flight ( 5x Flights Scheduled Daily )... Actually just double checked and its now 2x.
No MEM-EWR Flight ( 2x+ Scheduled Daily )

I have 3 packages i sent out Fedex Express yesterday, 2 went to the MEM hub. One is going to PIT and just landed in an A310 about 5 minutes ago ( Very late arrival for Fedex, 9:30 AM is probably about 2-3 hours late )

Another package i have is supposed to go to HRL ( Checked arrivals into HRL, Fedex isnt even in the list ).

Yesterday our hub here in FNT, my driver told me they were overloaded with packages ( He said 60,000 but i believe that was an exaggeration )... with a staggering 158 pickups scheduled for the FNT hub ( Typical pickups in FNT area is around 20-40, holiday times maybe around 60 max ). He said that he's never seen it that crazy before since he's worked for FedEx.

Is FedEx overloaded or something? Whats going on in Memphis?

Just concerned because im hoping my packages make it on time...and curious too.

If anyone could post some information regarding MEM and the FedEx operations there today, please post it!

thanks!

There was bad weather in Memphis yesterday, sleet, snow, and all that good stuff. Memphis is not very good at handling that kind of weather but luckily it doesn't get that bad very often.

Weather like last night is always a problem in a freight hub environment, especially in a place like MEM. Don't know how they are set up for deicing there, but would hazard a guess that deicing was an issue, especially for that kind of volume in the MEM hub. I remember one winter night at the TOL hub for Bax Global - winter snow and ice storm. They burned up 10,000 gallons of glycol and could get very few departures until the glycol supply was replenished. This would have been in 1991 or 92, as I recall.

There is a notice on the Fedex website that their operations at MEM are significantly affected by the ice storm yesterday.

http://fedex.com/us/update.html

There is also an article currently on the cnn.com website about shipping delays for Fedex and DHL. They interviewed a Fedex spokesman who said that they would have many packages 24-48 hours late because of the weather. The article said that they are trying to use some airports that they don't normally use, but it didn't specify where.

As for passenger operations yesterday at MEM about 60 percent of afternoon and 90 percent of evening flights were cancelled. It was air mattresses all over the terminal. It's been said the some of the delays were because of the way the county handled snow removal from the ramp area making hugh piles near the gates that prevented their use.

Glad there is no new snow tonight, wind chill expected down to -10. That's not the sunny south MEM was built for. - Me. I'm off for five. Yipeee.

OK, think of it this way.....

When the planes can't get in to MEM to unload and pick up their outbounds, it tends to push the schedule back and you get delays. Most of the inbound MEM flights where scheduled at the heart of the storm last night, so I'm sure they where not arriving until hours after there schedule departure blocks at 0330.

You are correct, HRL is not served by FDX, it's served by a 3rd Party Operator that FDX contracts.

Ah...HELLO....it's the shipping day before Christmas.. 1) the storm came on THE WORST night, at THE WORST time of day. 2) FDX is moving MILLIONS of packages in a VERY short time frame over the last 3 nights. I also did a quick Flight Tracker search.. from 2200 to 0300 there is a FDX flight landing in MEM every 6-8 miniutes...Think About It...!!

All three major shippers: FDX, UPS and DHL (Airborne) all got hammered last night. All three hubs where in the path of the snowstorm.

In short, expect a massive load of packages being delivered on Monday, 27 December 2004 instead of 24 December 2004. UPS, FedEx and DHL will be swamped trying to clear these delays well into next week.

Hi all,

Sorry for the late response... been really busy with holidays.

Got lucky and all my packages made it by Friday ( 3 Shipped Wednesday and 3 shipped Thursday )... was pretty happy about that, lol.

" You are correct, HRL is not served by FDX, it's served by a 3rd Party Operator that FDX contracts. "

Wrong... Fedex serves HRL with A300 right now, A310 during least-peak operations. I track all my packages and i've shipped to HRL before, all were on A310's, right now its A300 though.

Um yes im aware that there were a large amount of shipments shipped...i wasnt aware of how hard they got hit by the storm. Reason why i stated MEM was because other hubs for Fedex ( OAK for instance ) had no issues.

Another problem atleast what UPS was having in SDF. Cans freezing to the ramp. 2.4 million packages were stuck in SDF Friday due to the weather. Most of the 2 day air cans were frozen to the ramp and there was snow drifts that were as tall as the hubs. Combine all of that with the busiest time of year.
Happy Holidays too since they locked my other thread.

I didn't think it snowed 2 feet in the San Francisco Valley.., maybe that is why OAK had no issues...?
