Olympic Airways A340

I think Olympic should have gotten Boeing 777's or Boeing 747-400's. I heard they were going to get the 747-400 but was forced to get the a340. Anyone have any comments or information?

Which is precisely why they DIDN'T buy them. More capacity is only good if you can fill it in a profitable way.

Airlines don't buy planes because one of their pilots likes it over the competition...

The A340 works fine now for OA. OA's livery on an A340 looks amazing! For sure the best plane/airline livery combo.

I never said that airlines buy plains because of one of their pilots. i just said what i heard. And yes the A340 looks amazing and works well with OA. Im just saying i would rather see them with 777 or 744.

I flew one of Olympic's A340's from JFK to Athens. Beautiful airplane with a very professional crew and a high standard of inflight service. I was impressed.

...Forced to get the A340? Where these magic forces 'been sleeping when OA was ordering the 734 and the 738 and the 73G etc etc... and did not 'force' them to get the A320?

Where these magic forces 'been sleeping when they should have just stopped flying and stop robbing the GR taxpayer money to feed their unionized 'labor' force?

Where these magic forces 'been sleeping when OA did not bother to provide an aircraft for the Olympic Torch Relay and let ...Air Atlantic to have the honor to do so?

Too bad they' ve been sleeping a lot lately...

The A340, as well as the A330 line is well suited for OA's diminutive network. As are the 737's (both old and soon to be new). The 747-400 is just TOO much for the airline AND for ATH (hence why DL sends a 763 instead of a 777 over there). The A340 is about the biggest plane that you could fill up on the route between JFK/NYC and ATH, IMHO. I was talking to several friends in Delta-land in ATL about the ATH flight from JFK and they said theyd rather have the 777, but the loads just arent there, even in the summer, and neither is the aircraft, since DL has such a small fleet of 777's. I do have a model of an OA 744 though, its not bad, but it does look a bit overfed, lol.  Big thumbs up Must be the tzatziki...

OA in an alliance....with their crappy A300s and 737s and their pathetic hub in Athens (the airport rocks, but OA....) plus that they couldnt afford joning in one right now.

I recently got off of one of OA's A300's (FCO-ATH, equipment change), and they weren't all that crappy. I found it a LOT better than the 737-400 I was on later the same day. I can hardly call Athens a crappy hub for OA, granted, they need to vamp things up, but, its not for lack of trying. If OA could possibly join OneWorld one day, that would be nice, since they have agreements with American Airlines, Iberia and British Airways anyways. Does anyone know just when the new planes are due to arrive in ATH?

Well, regarding SW I've heard just about everything from they've already signed a contract up to they've lost interest - so it seems to be "business as usual" for SW in that regard...

Unfortunately, none of my former good contacts still seem to work for SW, so I cannot get any inside views from them any more... too bad...

Without getting into details about the airline: would this be an existing or a new operator of the type?

The latest info suggests used 733/734's will join the fleet. There are plenty on the used market at prices which make them highly desirable cash strapped OA.
