This may have been discussed in the past, but I've never seen it here. 10 days ago I bought a ticket on Delta.com for a round trip from Charleston, SC (CHS) to Portland, OR (PDX). At the time I bought my tickets, I went to the "seat selection" screen and picked my seats. For the entire itinerary of CHS-ATL-PDX-SLC-ATL-CHS there was one window seat available, which was on the ATL-CHS flight. The other four didn't have any window seats available. I always try for a window seat...after all, whats the point of travelling at 600 mph in a narrow pressurized tube 6 miles above the earth if you can't look out the window? Anyway, I was disappointed in the lack of window seats available. So, today, just for the heck of it, I went to Delta.com and checked. I was very surprised to find available window seats on all 5 legs of my trip! Is this because people cancelled? or is it because Delta made the seats available last minute? For all you people like me who want the window, but don't get one, I highly recommend checking with the airline a day or 2 before your flight...it worked for me.

All of the above reasons are true. Airline seat maps are constantly changing with people cancelling, upgrading, or just changing around their seats. Airlines also have seats they set aside for elites which are unblocked at a certain point before departure (varies airline to airline). Things are so easy now with interactive online seat maps that if you check everyday you are bound to be able to find better seats before flight time. Glad to hear you got the seats you wanted...it can definitely make a flight much more enjoyable.

With us FL the kiosk system tends to automatically assign window seats. And, many passengers doing kiosk action see they are assigned a window and want an aisle. Our 717's are two and three configuration in coach. Our 737-700 and 800's are the 3 and 3 setup. The kiosk computer especially with 2 or more passengers on the same PNR passenger name record/locator makes every attempt to seat them together usually leaving the middle seats for last. If all else fails and you can handle the requirements of emergency exit seating ask for it when you check in for your flight. At least our online and kiosk check in systems purposelessly omit the emergency exit seats and the bulkhead. But, especially on Florida bound flights, you could be bounced out of a bulkhead if a wheelchair passenger is on your flight. And, if it is a wheelchair passenger with a pet, as they say in New York "fagetta about it!"
