How strong is KLM in Latin America. Ofcourse they are strong in the Caribbean at CUR/AMS/SXM/BON.
But what about all the other countries, let's say south of Mexico ?

The AF/KLM group is the second strongest player in Latin America after Iberia.

The other destinations served by KLM metal are: Quito, Guayaquil, Lima and Sao Paulo. All with MD-11, except the latter, which is served with the 777-200 on a 6 weekly basis [to be uograded in the future].

Caracas was also one of their stations in the region, but was dropped rather recently. Now AF has announced increased capacity to CCS [747-400].

hey SouthAmerica thanks for the info!

Please don't forget the 3 weekly 747-400's and 3 weekly 747-300's (SLM) from AMS to PBM (Paramaribo - Suriname / Surinam). Although a lot of people think Surinam is apart of the Caribbean.. Its really a country from the main land of South-America.

with kind regards,

I'm hoping for years now, that one day AF/KLM will add La Paz, Bolivia to their destinations.

Surinam certainly isn't a part of the Caribbean, but I wouldn't consider it in Latin America either, under its conditon of former dutch colony. For the record, I didn't forget.  Big grin

From a very optimistic perspective, as possibilities are negligibles. If a flight to Bolivia is ever stuidied, VVI is the strongest candidate to nab the services.

I agree with SOUTHAMERICA, I dont think that LPB and/or VVI are in KL plans for the time being. Probably the first European airline to fly direct to Bolivia would be IB.

The destinations served by KLM metal are: Quito, Guayaquil, Lima and Sao Paulo. All with MD-11, except the latter, which is served with the 777-200 on a 6 weekly basis [to be uograded in the future].

Just a note to remind you that KL also flies daily to MEX with the 747!

As pointed out, GRU is served 6 x week with the 777 and as of Jun/05 will be upgraded to daily flights. GRU was KL launching destination for the 777 - before April/04 GRU was served with KL 747.

KL also has a partnership agreement with TAM (JJ) which connects pax onwards from GRU to EZE and GIG.

GRU, MEX and PNB are the only destination in Latin America to be served non-stop, as Quito, Quayaquil and Lima all have stops in one of the Caribbean islands. PNB is served codeshare with Surinam Airways, and fares are always very high as both Surinam and KL have a virtual monopoly on this route.

On a sidenote, if we throw in the KLM's cargo operations (or better KLM's 50% daughter Martinair cargo operations because they're the one very active in Latin America) one can see that Latin America is an important market for KLM (control almost the entire flower traffic between Latin America and Amsterdam). But then again I reckon the question wasn't abot the KLM Group...

SOUTHAMERICA:

Tks for the correction. I indeed overlooked the "South of Mexico" in the initial post.

LJ:

Very interesting point about Martinair, which not only operates charter/holiday flights but also has strong cargo operations.

What are Martinair's destinations in LatAm?

I know Martinair operates 2 x week nonstop flight AMS-FOR in Brazil with the 767-300. Any other destination? Maybe CUN?

Surinam certainly isn't a part of the Caribbean

Geographically that is accurate but check, they are members of the Caribbean Community Caricom!!

Own freight flights south of Mexico:
- Quito
- Guayaquil
- Bogota
- Lima
- Santiago de Chili
- Buenos Aires
- San Juan
- San Jose (next to pax flights).

They had a freight service from caracas but this is probably axed as I can't find anything anymore on this service

However they have an affiliate (Tampa Cargo) in Colombia which feeds the MIA flights but I'm not sure about the exact nature of the relationship. I think MP owns part of the airline but I'm not certain) If so the entire Tampa network can be added up to the MP network

Martinair has like 40% of property in Tampa Cargo since the late 90s and yes, sometimes they switch flights. I've seen Martinair MD-11s at MDE, which is the Tampa hub.

As a side note, KLM once operated to BOG but thr service was short lasting.

I gladly accept donations to pay for flight hours! This thing draws man...

KLM used to serve a lot more direct, but these destinations were dropped (in addition to Bogota and Caracas already mentioned):
Guatemala City, San Jose de Costa Rica, Panama, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile.
